The UK’s new car market saw a modest dip in November, with registrations down 1.6% to 151,154 units, according to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This marked the sixth decline of the year, largely driven by a 5.5% drop in demand from private buyers.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs), supported by the Electric Car Grant, accounted for 26.4% of the market, slightly ahead of the 25.1% share recorded in November 2023.

However, with volumes rising just 3.6%, this was the weakest month for BEV growth in nearly two years. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) grew 1.3% to reach a 13.1% share, while plug-in hybrids posted the strongest gains, up 14.8% to represent 11.9% of registrations.

Together, electrified vehicles captured a record 51.4% market share for the year, meaning petrol and diesel cars made up less than half of registrations for the third consecutive month. Despite BEV registrations hitting record volumes – 426,209 units added to UK roads in the past 11 months – their 22.7% year-to-date share remains well below the government’s 28% annual target.

Although last week’s Budget introduced measures to support the EV transition – including extended funding for the Electric Car Grant, a higher threshold for the VED Expensive Car Supplement, and additional infrastructure investment – the proposed “pence per mile” electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) risks undermining progress. By dampening demand at a critical time, the policy could push the market further off track from achieving net zero goals.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive said: "Even in a fragile market, zero emission vehicle uptake continues to rise, which is exactly what we need. But the weakest growth for almost two years – ahead of government announcing a new tax on EVs – should be seen as a wake-up call that sustained increase in demand for EVs cannot be taken for granted.

"We should be taking every opportunity to encourage drivers to make the switch, not punishing them for doing so, else the ambitions of government and industry will be thwarted."
