What vehicles are included in motorcycle breakdown cover?

We offer motorcycle breakdown cover for any eligible motorbike, moped or scooter. All we ask is that the engine is 49cc or over – so very small mopeds and scooters might not be covered.

Just so you know, we don’t offer any breakdown cover for electric pavement vehicles, electric wheelchairs, electric bikes, push bikes or any vehicle that isn’t road legal.

What types of motorbike breakdown cover are there?

As with our other cover, there are two types of motorbike breakdown cover to choose from: vehicle or personal cover. Here are the differences between the two.

Vehicle Motorcycle Cover

This type of cover applies to a specific motorbike. So it doesn’t matter who’s riding it when it breaks down, it will still be covered regardless.

This type of cover is ideal if you only have one motorbike in your household, and more than one person rides it.

Personal Motorcycle Cover

Personal cover means you’re covered on any eligible motorbike over 125cc as driver or passenger. For example, you’ll be covered when riding your own motorbike and when riding pillion on someone else’s. You’ll also be covered in any other eligible vehicle you drive, like a car or a van.2

This is ideal if you ride more than one motorbike, or if you want joint car and motorbike cover.

When looking at motorbike breakdown cover, it’s a good idea to compare different companies and cover levels. That way, you can make sure you get the right cover for you.

FAQs

The cheapest level of motorcycle breakdown cover starts from £6.25 a month, which is our Extra cover. Exactly how much your breakdown cover costs depends on:
  • The level of cover you choose – Basic, Extra or Complete
  • The type of cover you choose – personal cover usually costs more than vehicle cover
  • Whether you need add-ons – like Onward Travel, Key Replace or Battery Replace
Q. Am I covered if I’m riding pillion?
This depends on your level of motorbike breakdown cover. If you’ve taken out personal breakdown cover, you’re covered on whatever motorbike you’re riding, or riding pillion on.

We’re happy to cover modified bikes but it’s always worth contacting us to discuss your options first if you’re not sure. Our motorbike insurance covers classic bikes and supersport models so our motorbike breakdown usually supports this.
Q. Can you recover my motorcycle?
Yes, we can. We always aim to fix your motorbike at the roadside. But if we can’t, we can recover and tow it. The destination depends on your level of motorbike cover.
Q. What if I use my motorbike for business?
If you use your motorbike for business – as courier, perhaps – you might need RAC Business Breakdown Cover.
Q. Will my moped or scooter be covered with motorbike cover?
Yes, you will be able to cover your scooter or moped on the same policy as your motorbike if you take out vehicle breakdown cover. This type of policy will allow you to cover up to three different vehicles at the same time and will provide you with complete peace of mind in whichever one you’re driving in.
Q. Am I covered in Europe?
Not automatically – don’t assume your UK breakdown cover applies when riding your motorbike in Europe. The good news is that we offer European breakdown cover for motorbikes over 125cc, and provide assistance in 49 different countries, with flexible pricing, so you can tailor your cover exactly to your trip if you like.
Q. Can you get motorcycle breakdown cover?
At the RAC, we offer cover for motorcycles, mopeds and scooters above 49cc as part of our standard cover. And if you also drive a car or van, you can get cover for any eligible vehicle2, including your bike, under our personal cover. So you don’t need to worry about getting separate specialist cover for your motorcycle.
Q. Am I covered for electronic pavement vehicles under motorbike cover?
We don’t cover electronic pavement vehicles, electric wheelchairs or electric bikes, or any vehicles below 49cc.
Q. Are motorbike parts covered?
Motorbike parts aren’t covered under our standard breakdown cover. If we have the spare parts to get you going again, we’ll fit them for free, but you may have to pay for the cost of the parts themselves.
Q. Can I add a motorbike to my current breakdown policy?
Yes. If you have vehicle cover, you can add up to 2 more vehicles to your policy, including motorbikes. If you have personal cover, you’re already covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle, so you’re already covered on your motorbike (as long as it’s above 49cc).
Q. What should I do if my motorbike breaks down on the road?

If you have you already have cover, the quickest way to get help is online, or through the MyRAC app. Or call us on 0333 2000 999.

If you aren’t an RAC member, we can still help. Just call 0330 159 8743.
