What is alternative transport ('onward travel')?

Alternative transport (also known as 'onward travel') is usually an add-on for your breakdown cover. It helps you stay mobile if your vehicle needs a repair in a garage after a breakdown. For example, you could be covered for a taxi back home from the garage. Or a hire car to help you and your family continue your journey.

At the RAC, we include some level of alternative transport with all cover levels for your peace of mind. For example, our Standard cover includes a 20-mile taxi from the garage. Or you can upgrade to get a hire car or taxi for longer for up to 7 days (up to the value of £500).

How does alternative transport work?  

Alternative transport is there to keep you moving after a breakdown. If your patrol can't fix you and tows you to a garage for repair, you can make the most of your alternative transport (or 'onward travel').

How it works and what you're entitled to depends on the cover level you choose.

Standard

If your vehicle’s taken to a garage, we will reimburse you for a taxi up to 20 miles to one single destination.

Advanced

If your vehicle’s taken to a garage, you’ll have a hire car or taxi for up to 2 days (up to the value of £150). Or we can sort a hotel for you while you wait for your vehicle to be fixed.

You can make up to 5 claims per year for alternative transport.

Ultimate

We’ll increase your hire car or taxi limit to up to 7 days (up to the value of £500). So you can stay mobile even if your vehicle’s in for more serious repairs. Alternatively, you can ask for a hotel while you wait for your vehicle to be fixed.

Can I add alternative transport to my policy?
