What is electric car insurance?
Electric car insurance is car insurance for vehicles powered by electricity. It offers the same core cover as car insurance, such as protection against things like accidents, theft, and damage.
As an electric vehicle owner, you can benefit from EV-specific elements, like accidental damage, fire and theft of your battery.
Additional EV-specific cover, like recovery if you run out of charge, may be available as optional extras.
Battery cover as standard
Protection for your battery against accidental damage, fire and theft is included
What's included with RAC electric car insurance?
What’s included with RAC Car Insurance depends on the level of cover you choose. Our Premier and Plus policies protect you if you’re hit by an uninsured driver, and you won’t lose your no claims bonus if your car is damaged by vandalism. You’re also covered for child seats, transfer home after an accident, and increased levels of personal accident and accessories benefits.
Our Online Premier product is an online self-serve only policy that also includes breakdown and motor legal protection as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Electric and hybrid car insurance from RAC starts from just £328. One in four customers pay this price or lower.
This is based on data from new RAC customers who bought electric or hybrid car insurance directly through rac.co.uk between 01/05/25 and 30/04/26. Please note that this is an annual based premium. It does not include optional extras or finance costs. Your actual price may vary subject to factors like your car, driving history, location, and level of cover.
Electric car insurance can sometimes cost more than petrol or diesel car cover. This is because electric vehicles (EVs) often cost more and use advanced technology.
EV repairs may also need specialist technicians and approved repair centres. This can increase claim costs.
But EV insurance isn't always more expensive. Costs still depend on factors like your driving history, the vehicle model, and how the car is used.
No. There’s no specific additional excess added for electric cars. The compulsory excess is set by your insurer. It’s based on make, model, age and condition of your car.
Whether you own or lease the battery in your electric or hybrid car, it’s covered for accidental damage, fire and theft.
When you take out a policy, you need to let us know if you’re leasing the battery. If your car’s written off, it’s important that the payments for the car and battery go to the right place.
If you own the battery, the value of the car and the battery make up the market value of your car.
Yes. We work with a network of approved repairers, who have the tools and technology to fix electric and hybrid cars.
You can choose to add RAC Breakdown cover to your electric car insurance policy from as little as £5 per year. We’ll always aim to fix faults there and then and if your battery goes flat, we can send out one of our vans with our handy mobile charger to give you a 10-mile boost, rather than towing you to the nearest charge station like other providers.
Yes, simply log in to your online account to make changes such as a change of address, change of vehicle or to add or remove a driver. No fuss, no phone call needed and open 24/7.
No, you don't. Specialist electric insurance policies are available. But RAC Car Insurance covers electric vehicles as standard. So you don't need to worry.
RAC covers most:
- Fully electric vehicles (EVs)
- Hybrid vehicles
- Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)
- Mild hybrids
Enter your car details when you get a quote. Then we’ll confirm if we can offer cover for your electric or hybrid car.
In general, we don't cover OTA updates as they're a modification to your car. But some of the insurers we work with have different policies on OTAs, so make sure you check your Terms & Conditions.
