Jack Halstead

Lead RAC Mobile Servicing and Repair Technician

Jack Halstead is an RAC Mobile Mechanic with more than 13 years’ experience working on cars. He started out in the motor trade straight after school, completing a Level 3 apprenticeship with Halfords after taking part in a one-day-a-week college release programme while still at school.

Jack's goal

His problem-solving mindset is a big part of how Jack Halstead approaches his work. He says some of the biggest challenges include sourcing parts quickly, dealing with unexpected extra work and factoring those issues into an already busy day while still keeping customers moving.

RAC Mobile Mechanic of the Year 2026

In 2026, after working for the RAC for just two years, Jack has won the prestigious ‘RAC Mobile Mechanic of the Year’ award. It was his strong work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond for customers that won him the title which was given to him at the RAC’s annual awards ceremony at Silverstone, the legendary home of the British Grand Prix and MotoGP events.

Jack’s Experience

Before joining the RAC, Jack Halstead spent 13 years working in a garage. He says he was not actively looking for a move, but after his dad broke down and was helped by an RAC patrol, the idea of joining the RAC started to appeal. A friend later spotted the RAC Mobile Mechanic role, and Jack Halstead applied.

Since joining the RAC, Jack has brought strong technical experience to the role, including previous EV training. He says the RAC also offers wider support, including technical courses such as electrics and diagnostics, as well as training that helps colleagues in customer-facing situations.

For Jack, one of the best parts of the job is the variety. Each day gives him the chance to plan his own work, speak directly to customers and solve different problems in different places. He enjoys the satisfaction of helping customers get back on the road, especially when they need their car for something important.

Jack Halstead works across a wide range of vehicles and repairs. He has even taken a gearbox out while working on the floor after a technician dropped a bolt inside it, describing those jobs as the sort that help get customers “out of trouble”.

Away from work

Away from work, cars are still a big part of Jack Halstead’s life. He jokes that he works on them all day and can still end up working on them in the evening. He also enjoys going to the gym and listening to live music, with tastes ranging from rock to drum and bass.
