Asda has been selling fuel since 1967 and today there are more than 500 Asda Petrol Stations across the UK.

Founded on 3 May 1965, the Asda name comes from a retail partnership between the Asquith family and Associated Dairies (Asquith and Dairies).

Asda opened its first fuel station in Halifax but none of the major oil companies supported Asda’s discount fuel proposition, so the supermarket made a deal with Russian oil company NAFTA.

Asda started working with Mobile Shell and Texaco in the 1970s. In the 1990s, Asda started sourcing its fuel from the same refineries as the branded oil major petrol and diesel companies. In 2022, Asda acquired 132 fuel station forecourts from the Co-op.

According to the Petrol Retailers Association Market Review 2024, Asda has a 7.8% market share for motor fuel volume sales in the UK.

In addition to selling petrol and diesel, Asda fuel stations also have air pumps and car washing facilities. Many Asda Petrol Stations operate 24 hours a day and feature a convenience shop, which also offers hot and cold drinks.
