Benefits of driving to the Alps
When it comes to driving from the UK to the Alps mountain range, there are many advantages in taking the road trip.
Driving to Europe from the UK not only allows drivers to set their own schedule, meaning that making spontaneous stops or detours to explore scenic spots, villages, or attractions along the way are an option.
No matter if you are travelling in ski season or the height of summer, driving means you can carry more luggage, including bulky items like ski gear or hiking equipment, without worrying about airline restrictions or extra fees both ways.
Once you make it to France – either using the ferry or Eurotunnel – the route to the Alps is filled with stunning landscapes, historic cities, and some great road trips.
Although driving from the UK is an option, renting a vehicle once you have made it to one of the nation’s where the Alps is located is also a good choice for drivers.
Packing the car for a trip to the Alps
Unlike traditional holidays to a major city or beach location, the Alps in Europe may require extra items to make the journey as smooth as possible.
Due to the mountainous terrain, hiking boots and socks are required – a long with items needed for long walks including a large backpack and walking poles.

First, if you are travelling during the winter months, will your vehicle be able to travel through mountainous terrain with all the extra weight on the tyres it currently has?
Driving in snow and ice is challenging, so consider winter tyres. Also, winter tyre chains are a good option to keep in your vehicle.
If you are driving to a ski resort, check that there is suitable roads and parking available for your vehicle. Visitors may need to park somewhere else and get a shuttle bus to their final location.
