EV Boost mobile charging system

We’ve broken new ground again by developing the first lightweight, mobile electric vehicle (EV)-charger system capable of giving stranded out-of-charge vehicles an up to 10-mile power boost from a standard orange RAC patrol van.

Our technical team has integrated a high output generator fitted to the latest, cleanest diesel engines in our Ford Transits and our Heavy Duty 4x4 patrol vans. It works with all Type 1 and Type 2 connections ensuring we can charge 99% of electric vehicles on the road today.

Many EVs can’t be towed normally and need to be transported with all wheels off the ground which usually requires a flatbed vehicle. So if an electric vehicle runs out of charge in a busy urban locations like red routes in London or even just a narrow road, it can be very problematic.

This enables our patrols to help stranded EV drivers at the roadside with a power boost, equivalent to a top-up from a fuel can for a petrol or diesel vehicle, to get them on their way again.

As of Summer 2020, we have 80 patrol vans across the country fitted with the EV Boost system.
