Breakdown Help - Changes to my membership

You can update your address, email address and phone number online: Change contact details on your breakdown policy. This is a quick and easy way for you to amend your details.

Alternatively, you can send us an address change request through our website by going to the Email Us page and filling in the form (please choose 'Breakdown - change of address or name' from the Subject drop-down box).

Please note: some changes cannot be made online so in these instances please call us on 0330 159 0740 if:

  • You are not the lead member. Please ask the lead member to complete the form or phone us directly
  • You would like to change the level of cover, or add/remove a member from your membership
  • You have changed your vehicle - you need to let us know of this change if you are on a Vehicle Based Membership (VBM) or if you are on a Personal Based Membership (PBM) with either Battery Rescue or Garage, Parts and Labour. In any other circumstance you do not need to let us know of this vehicle change
  • You are currently broken down

If any of the vehicles covered on the membership are used for business purposes, then you cannot make changes to your policy online, please call us on 0330 159 0740.

Q. How do I change or upgrade my cover level of my breakdown membership?

If you would like to upgrade and benefit from a higher level of cover please call our customer services team on 0330 159 0740. They'll take a few details from you and be able to help straight away.

Q. How do I add (or remove) someone to (from) my existing breakdown cover?

If you would like to add or remove a person to / from your breakdown cover policy please call our customer services team on 0330 159 0740. They'll take a few details from you and be able to help straight away.

When adding a person to your policy please note that this person or person(s) must reside at the same address as yourself.

Q. What do I do if I'm not the lead member?

The lead member is the main person named on the policy schedule as “Lead member”. Due to our Data Protection policy only the lead member can renew or make amendments to the breakdown cover.

Before you contact us please make sure that you are the lead member so that we can protect your information and give you our best possible service. This also applies to renewing your breakdown cover via the online renewals option.

Q. How do I add an extra member to my family cover?

If you want to add a family member to your existing policy, please call RAC Customer service on 0330 159 0740.

Q. Can I cover my partner / friend / family member?

Our personal-based breakdown cover products are available to individual members, joint memberships and family groups.

  • Individual membership covers you only as a driver or a passenger in any vehicle.
  • Joint membership covers you and one other named member of your household as a driver or a passenger in any vehicle.
  • Family membership covers you and up to four other named members of your household as a driver or a passenger in any vehicle.

With RAC Vehicle based cover, you can choose to cover up to three named vehicles* by registration number no matter who's driving. So if your partner/friend/family member drives the same vehicle then they're already covered.

All people or vehicles covered under the policy must reside at the registered address listed on the policy.

* Non-commercial vehicles only, excluding certain vehicle types.

Q. Can I transfer my existing breakdown cover to my new car?

If you've got Personal Breakdown membership you're covered in any vehicle* whether you are a passenger or a driver. Therefore if you're in a car when it breaks down, you can call the RAC for assistance even if you're not driving it at the time.

RAC Vehicle Breakdown membership covers up to three named vehicles* by registration number no matter who is driving. If you have Vehicle Breakdown cover, as long as the vehicle is named specifically (by registration no.) on your policy, then you're covered. If you wish to replace one of the vehicles named on your policy, please call 0330 159 1111.
