What is Learner Driver Insurance?

RAC Learner Driver Insurance is a short-term car insurance cover to help provisional drivers get extra driving experience as they learn and prepare for their test. It’s designed to sit alongside an existing annual car insurance policy on the vehicle used for practice, and you must be accompanied by a driver between the ages of 25-75 who has held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years.

Learner drivers are insured between the hours of 6am to midnight and must be aged 17 or over. If you are driving your own car, the curfew does not apply.

Our policy can cover you in a wide range of cars, including most family cars. We will cover up to Insurance Group 40, with a current market value up to £40,000 and up to 7 seats. Cover can be purchased by the day, week or month, for between 2 hours and 5 months* maximum.

Should an accident occur whilst the learner is behind the wheel, this accident will not impact the no claims discount of the main driver’s policy, making it a practical and cost effective way for learners to get practice at home.

Frequently Asked Questions - see our FAQ page for more

Yes you can. The vehicle doesn’t have to be annually insured, and there is also no curfew, so you can drive at whatever time of day you like. What’s more, if you’re using your own car, our policies start from just 1 month’s worth of cover.
Can a provisional driver be added to an existing annual policy?
Yes, a provisional licence holder can be added as a ‘named driver’ to an existing annual policy. Any changes to an existing policy should be discussed with the existing insurance provider. However, adding a provisional driver to an existing policy is likely to push the price of the premium up for the remainder of the policy year, as well as attract an administration fee.

This is why we offer Learner Driver Insurance, as it means learners don’t have to pay for a full year of insurance, and most importantly, if they are involved in an incident while borrowing someone else’s car, it does not affect the No Claims Discount of the main policyholder.

Am I covered to drive at any time day or night?
Our products are designed to allow you to practice driving under supervision and so you may only drive between 6.00am and midnight. This restriction is in place to reduce the risk of fraud and to keep our prices competitive for learner drivers.

If you are driving in your own car however, this curfew does not apply and you may drive at any time during the day.
Does the accompanying driver have to be the vehicle’s owner?
No, as long they satisfy the licence criteria (see above). If you aren’t using your own car you must have permission from the owner.
Are there any vehicles you won’t insure?
We will cover up to Insurance Group 40, with a current market value up to £40,000 and up to 7 seats. When you enter the registration number in the application form, you will be advised if we can provide cover.
Can I buy a policy if there is no annual cover on the vehicle?
Only if you are driving your own car. If you are using someone else’s car, an existing annual insurance policy must be in place for that vehicle for the duration of your RAC Learner Driver policy.

What if I cancel more than 14 days after commencement – can I get a refund?
If you wish to cancel more than 14 days after policy commencement, you will still be entitled to a refund, calculated on the same basis as above. There is no cancellation charge but you will not be refunded any other fees or card charges.
