Learner driver insurance
Learner driver insurance is a temporary form of policy that is created specifically for people who hold a provisional licence and want to practise driving in a private vehicle before passing their test.
It exists because provisional licence holders are legally required to have valid insurance whenever they drive on public roads, even if they are only practising under supervision.
Driving without appropriate cover can result in fines or penalty points, so learner insurance provides a safe and lawful way for new drivers to gain experience outside their formal lessons.
This type of insurance works independently from the car owner’s existing policy, which is one of its biggest advantages.
When a learner is added directly to someone else’s insurance as a named driver, any accident they have could affect that person’s ‘No Claims Bonus’ and increase their future premiums.
Learner driver insurance avoids this problem by sitting as a standalone policy, meaning that if the learner has an accident, the owner’s insurance record remains protected.
This makes it a practical and reassuring option for families or friends who want to let a learner practise in their car without risking long‑term financial consequences.
A further benefit of learner driver insurance is its flexibility.
Many providers offer short‑term policies that can last from a few days right up to several months, allowing learners to match their insurance to how often and how long they plan to practise.
The cover ends once you pass your driving test.
How does learner driver insurance work?
The cover itself functions much like standard car insurance, but it is tailored to the needs of provisional drivers.
Learners must always be supervised by an appropriately qualified driver, and their insurance only applies during supervised practice.
Policies can cover anything from basic third‑party protection to comprehensive cover that includes damage to the vehicle being driven, depending on what the learner chooses to purchase.
Some insurers even offer the chance for learners to begin building their own No Claims Bonus before they pass, although this depends on the specific policy and the company.
Do all learner drivers need learner driver insurance?
Anyone driving on UK roads must have valid insurance in place.
That rule also applies to learner drivers, just as much as qualified ones.
Professional driving lessons usually include insurance automatically, so you’re covered while practising with an instructor, but if you want to gain experience outside of those lessons in your own vehicle, you’ll need to arrange separate learner driver insurance to make sure you are legally protected.
If you are practising in someone else’s car, it’s important to check that their policy allows a learner to drive it.
Sometimes this can be done by being added as a named driver, but it depends on the insurer. And if you intend to use your own car during your sessions with an instructor, you should confirm that your learner insurance covers this, as not all policies permit it.
Driving without proper insurance is treated seriously by the police.
It can result in a £300 on-the-spot fine and six penalty points on a driving licence. It is important to remember that more severe penalties may follow if the case goes to court.

Are you eligible for learner driver insurance?
You are eligible for learner driver insurance if you meet several requirements, but importantly you must hold a valid provisional driving licence and be a permanent resident of the UK.
Also, the address on your provisional licence must match the address used on your insurance policy.
Drivers will also need to have a clean recent record, which means no more than one non fault claim, no at fault claims, and no incidents that could lead to a claim.
In addition, you must not have any penalty points on your licence and must have no motoring offences or convictions.
You must also not have been convicted of offences involving fraud, theft, robbery, handling stolen goods, or be the subject of any ongoing police investigation related to these matters.
However, the vehicle you use must also meet certain conditions to qualify for learner driver insurance.
The vehicle must be registered in the UK and have a current market value of under £40,000.
It should also have no more than seven seats, including the driver’s seat, and it must not have been modified in any way.
The car cannot be a hire or rental vehicle, nor can it be a seized vehicle or one held in a police compound.
It must not be used to carry passengers or goods for payment, nor be involved in transporting hazardous items.
Finally, the vehicle must not be used or driven in any hazardous location.
What is covered in learner driver insurance?
Although policies can vary, here is what is usually included in a learner driver insurance policy:
- Cover if your vehicle is damaged
- Cover if your vehicle is stolen
- Legal liability
- Medical expenses
- Cover during driving test
- Vehicle recovery
- Personal belongings
Can I add a learner driver to my car insurance?
If the learner driver is practising in their own vehicle, they can simply purchase learner driver insurance policy that will provide the necessary cover for both them and you as the supervising driver.
However, this type of policy is designed specifically for learners and allows them to use their own car without affecting the main driver's existing insurance.
If the learner will be driving your car, the situation is different.
In that case, you must ensure they are officially added as a named driver on your existing car insurance policy before they get behind the wheel.
This gives them the legal permission and appropriate insurance cover to drive your vehicle while learning.
