What is a water pump on a car?

A car water pump is an essential part of an engine cooling system, and is responsible for circulating coolant between the engine and the radiator.

The pump is driven by the timing or auxiliary belt – or by an independent electric motor that’s only job is to keep the pump system moving. Most modern vehicles tend to use electric motors.

No matter what is used, its job is to keep coolant continuously flowing through the system in order to regulate engine temperature.

Without a water pump, heat builds up rapidly and increases the risk of an engine overheating.

If this continues it can lead to serious damage to the engine.

As coolant absorbs the heat from the engine, it travels to the radiator where the heat is dispersed by the incoming cool air from the road – and then the process starts again.

Average car water pump repair cost

The average cost to repair a car water pump is around £273. However, this can vary due to the make, model, and age of the vehicle – as well as the overall condition of the vehicle’s surrounding components.

Common car water pump problems

A faulty or damaged car water pump can lead to serious overheating issues in the engine – and if not addressed – lead to more expensive fixes.

Here are common issues to look out for:

  • Coolant leaks: over time, worn out seals or damaged head gaskets can lead to fluid leaking from the system
  • Overheating: perhaps the most common issue, this is a sign that coolant isn’t flowing the system correctly
  • Belt issues: if the system uses an auxiliary belt, it may be worn down and slipping. This will need to be replaced, otherwise coolant wont flow properly through the system

If you have an issue with your water pump, take your vehicle to a trusted local garage. If there are any other problems, the speak to a mobile mechanic

How often should a car water pump be replaced?

Most manufacturers recommend that the majority of modern vehicles have car water pumps that can last around 100,000 miles.

However, this can depend on its usage, level of servicing, and quality of the original parts.

This is why it can generally last anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles.
