What is a car radiator?
A car radiator is a key part of an engine cooling system and is crucial in maintaining the optimum operating temperature of the engine and preventing it from overheating.
How does a car radiator work?
When an engine is running, it quickly heats up due to the combustion processes occurring. To prevent the engine from overheating, a water-based coolant fluid circulates around the engine block.
The temperature of the coolant rises quickly, so it is pumped around a sealed, closed system including the radiator. When the vehicle is driven, outside air passes through the radiator, cooling the hot coolant fluid circulating within it.
The cooled fluid is then pumped through the system back to the engine to maintain optimal engine temperature.
To assist the process, and where the vehicle is moving very slowly, such as in traffic etc, electric fans are also used and are positioned in front of the radiator panel. These are controlled either by a simple temperature sensor switch or electronically controlled – typical in modern vehicles.
Note, on older vehicle types, a simple mechanical fan is usually fitted, which is driven directly from the engine pulley using a fan belt.
Step-by-step process of a car’s radiator:
- The engine creates heat through the combustion process
- The heat in the engine block and cylinders is then absorbed by the engine coolant flowing through the system
- Coolant circulating through the system takes the heat from the engine block, which carries the heat away
- A thermostat dictates where the temperature goes. In the cold, the thermostat valves stay closed, so the engine warms up quickly. In warmer temperatures, the coolant freely flows through the system
- A water pump keeps the coolant moving when the engine is running
- Hot coolant is sent to the radiator and outside air passing through it and cools the coolant fluid
- The cooled coolant then returns to the engine to start the process again
Common car radiator issues
If there is a problem with your car radiator, the most obvious symptom will be overheating, with maybe a warning light on or a message appearing on the dash. Here are some causes of overheating that may be related to the radiator:
- Engine coolant leaks: often from cracks in the radiator, or damaged hoses or sensors
- Rusted radiator: over time dirt and rust can clog parts of the system
- Corrosion: common fault that damages the metal parts of the radiator
(though modern vehicles use plastic or aluminium radiators)
- Cooling fan not working: if the fan stops working for any reason, then the radiator may not be able to cool down enough, leading to overheating
- Coolant issues: sludge buildup and/or using the wrong coolant can damage the system or block up parts of the radiator cores
If you believe there is an issue with the car radiator, it is best to speak to a mobile mechanic to get it seen to as soon as possible.
