Top 10 uninsured hotspots in the UK
Consumer Editor
Newly released data from the MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) has revealed the top 10 UK cities and towns with the highest rates of uninsured drivers.
The data has uncovered the worst offending areas for uninsured driving, with Thurrock in Essex leading the pack.
Recent Government figures show the economic cost of uninsured driving, including compensation for victims, emergency services, medical costs and loss of productivity, is £1 billion a year.
This means that tackling this issue not only keeps our roads safe but reduces the financial burden on UK drivers and citizens.
According to MIB, an uninsured vehicle is seized every four minutes across the UK, with almost 120,000 seized so far in 2025.
Punishments for being caught as an uninsured driver, will result in a £300 fixed penalty notice and six points on their driving licence.
In some scenarios, the seized vehicle may even be destroyed.
If the case goes to court, uninsured drivers could be handed an unlimited fine and a driving ban.
