For most drivers, the annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a key part of vehicle ownership. But how long does the MOT test take to complete and what are the most common reasons for delays and problems?
In this car maintenance guide, we tell you everything you need to know about how long an MOT takes and what factors can result in lengthy testing times.

How long does an MOT take?
Your car’s annual MOT should take between 45 and 60 minutes to complete. Some garages will allow you to wait while the test is carried out, usually at the reception area of the MOT test centre. You might even get a free cup of coffee while you wait.
If the test centre is busy or needs more time to complete the MOT, you will be asked to leave a contact telephone number and return when the car is ready. In some cases, you’ll be asked to drop the car off in the morning and collect it at the end of the working day.
Will an MOT take longer if my car fails the test?
If your car fails its MOT, it should still take 45 minutes and 1 hour to complete the actual test. However, resolving the problems that have caused the MOT failure will take longer to put right.
Car repairs can take anywhere from one or two hours to a few days to complete. If the garage needs to source specialist parts, the repair may take even longer.
It’s important to note that each part of the MOT test will result in a pass or a failure – or an MOT advisory.
You will not be able to drive your car away after an MOT failure if one of the following apply:
- The current MOT certificate has expired
- A ‘dangerous’ problem has been found during the MOT test
You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle that has failed its MOT because of a ‘dangerous’ problem.
If the car is repaired and an MOT retest takes place within 10 days of the original test then only the failed items will be retested.

Why does an MOT take so much time to complete?
The MOT is an in-depth safety check of your vehicle. The reason it takes so much time is down to the fact it involves checks on important components.
The MOT test also needs specialist equipment that require time to set up and run effectively. This is especially true for testing brakes and vehicle emissions.
During the MOT, visual checks will be carried out on the following items:
- Brakes
- Steering
- Lighting
- Electrical equipment
- Axles
- Wheels
- Tyres
- Suspension
- Seat belts
- Air bags
- Exhaust emissions
- Body condition
- Registration plate
- Windscreen, mirrors and washers
How long does an MOT and service take?
An MOT test typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete, while a full service requires up to 90 minutes. This means an MOT and service will take at least 2.5 hours to complete.
Many drivers choose to book a full service at the same time as their MOT as it saves time, as you don’t need separate appointments and trips to the garage.
This approach helps ensure the vehicle is not only roadworthy and legally compliant but also running efficiently, as the service can identify and address potential issues before they become more serious problems.
By having both carried out together, you can save time and minimise disruption, while also benefiting from the reassurance that your vehicle has undergone a comprehensive check in a single visit.
However, if there are any major repairs needed, the total time spent at the garage can be significantly longer.
Benefits of servicing your vehicle
Regular car servicing plays a key role in keeping your vehicle is the best condition possible – and helps identify and potential issues a lot earlier than at the annual MOT.
It also reduces the risk of a breakdown as well as any further expensive repairs.
Here are some of the important results of car servicing:
- Optimises engine performance
- Maximises fuel efficiency
- Extends lifespan of important components
- Reduces likelihood of a breakdown
- Increases safety of driver, passengers, and other road users
- Retains resale value
