There are many ways to enjoy a road trip across Europe, and one of the best for taking a larger group of people is driving a minibus.

Although there are different rules in place for those looking to take a larger vehicle, it can also be a great option for those looking to take more personal items with you.

Here, we look at what you’ll need to drive a minibus in Europe.

What is a minibus?

A minibus is a type of vehicle that can carry more passengers than any type of car, but few than a full-sized bus.

The number of seats can range from 7 to 16 seats, not including the driver.

They are commonly used by drivers who have hired minibuses for taking large groups to events, airport transfer or other activities that require more space to carry items.

For drivers in the UK, those with a full licence can drive a vehicle with up to 8 passenger seats.

However, they will need to apply for a D1 licence to drive a larger minibus that can carry up to 16 passengers.

Can I drive a minibus in Europe?

Yes, you can drive a minibus in Europe if you have a full UK drivers’ licence.

The minibus must not have more than 16 seats (not including the driver), and you must also have all your relevant documentation with you.

This includes, driving licence, passport, European Breakdown Cover, emission stickers, and International Driving Permit.

You may also need to have certain safety equipment on board. Check the country-specific requirements before leaving.

All drivers must be over the age of 21 and have held a licence for more than two years.

In some countries, to be able to rent and drive a minibus, you must be at least 25 years old.

The vehicle must not weigh more than 3.5 tonnes.

Can I drive a minibus in France?

Yes, you can drive a minibus in France if you have a full UK driving licence and be over the age of 21.

The minibus must not have more than 16 passenger seats and you must have insurance and breakdown cover.

Yes, you can drive a 9-seater minibus in France with a UK driving licence. You will need to make sure you have the correct documentation before travelling into France from the UK.

Can I drive a 17-seat minibus in France?

No, you cannot drive a 17-seater minibus in France on a UK driving licence.

You’ll need to take a new driving test to acquire a category D licence. Drivers must already have a full, valid UK driving licence. There is both a practical and theory test you’ll need to pass.

Can I drive a minibus in Germany?

Yes, you can drive a 9-seater minibus in Germany with a full, valid UK driving licence. You’ll need to organise car insurance and have European Breakdown Cover before you leave on your trip.
