Fitting the Box

Getting your RAC Black Box fitted is easy. It normally takes less than an hour and will be carried out at a time and location convenient for you.

PLEASE NOTE - you must ensure your RAC Black Box is fitted within 14 days of your policy start date, otherwise your policy will be cancelled and you will be charged a cancellation fee.

1. Booking your appointment
Shortly after you purchase RAC Black Box Insurance you’ll receive an email with a link to our online booking service to arrange a box fitting appointment. Fitting can take place Monday to Saturday 8am to 4pm, and is subject to availability. You will be given the option of either a morning (AM) or afternoon (PM) appointment.

2. The box
Our box is the about the size of a matchbox and is normally fitted onto your vehicles battery. Once installed you won't even know it's there and it has no effect on the performance of your car.

3. Once the box is fitted you’ll receive an email containing your user ID and password. These are needed to access the free Driver App or portal where you can monitor your Driver Score, car health and journey detail.

Can I drive my car before the box is fitted?

Yes, you will be insured to drive the car from the moment the policy starts as we understand it may take a few days to arrange you black box fitting. You have 14-days to get the box fitted from the policy start date. 

Will I be contacted on the day the box is being fitted?

Our engineer will contact you the day before the appointment and confirm an approximate arrival time within your AM or PM slot. Once the box is fitted, you will receive an email with your login details for the telematics portal so you can start accessing your journey data.

How long will the box fitting take?

The box fitting can take up to an hour, although generally takes less than that. To ensure your policy remains active during the policy term, we need to ensure the device is installed and working correctly.

Who will fit the box to my car?

One of our contracted engineers will fit the black box to your vehicle. The engineer will arrive to the fitting in a van and carry ID with them. If there are any problems locating you on the day, they will call you using the mobile number provided.

Can I select a date for the fitting?

Yes you can select your preferred fitting date but this must be within the first 14-days of your policy. You will also have the option to choose between an am or pm slot. The engineer will contact you the day before the appointment and confirm an approximate arrival time within your chosen slot. 

Do I need to be there the day my box is fitted?

On the fitting day someone will need to be present with the car keys and to sign off the box fitting. This doesn’t need to be you but please note, we must be able to start the car engine to complete the fitting. Installation normally takes less than an hour.

If we are unable to fit the box on the day because no one is available or there is an issue with the vehicle, you will have to pay a £45 missed installation appointment fee. 

Where will the black box be fitted to my car?

Our box is the about the size of a matchbox and is normally fitted onto your vehicles battery out of sight. Once installed you won't even know it's there and it has no effect on the performance of your car.

If you need to change the battery on your car at any time during the period of cover, please contact us so we can discuss how to transfer the box so your cover remains in place.

What happens if I need to cancel my fitting on the day?

Cancelling your box fitting with less that 24 hours notice will incur a missed installation appointment fee of £45. By choosing to rearrange your appointment, its also likely there will be reduced availability from our fitters. Please note failure to fit your box within 14 days of the policy start date will result in policy cancellation.

How do I book my box fitting appointment?

After purchasing your policy with us you will receive an email from our fitting partner containing a unique link to book your black box fitting date. Click on the link to select your preferred fitting date -please note this must be within 14 days of your policy start date. Morning or afternoon slots are available and the fitter will come to a location of your choice, whether this be at home or work.

What happens if I don’t get my box fitted within the first 14-days?

If you fail to get your box fitted within the first 14 days of your policy start date, as per the terms and conditions of this product, your policy may be cancelled. You will receive written notice of cancellation at least 7-days prior to the policy being cancelled, giving you time to either get the box fitted or arrange alternative insurance for your vehicle.

There aren’t any available appointments in the 14-day window, what do I do?

Please let us know as soon as possible so we can speak directly to our installers and agree a suitable fitting time and date.

I can’t make any of the available box fitting appointments. Can I get an extension?

If appointment slots are available during your 14-day window, please try to accommodate your box fitting on one of these dates. Don’t forget, your fitting can be arranged at a time and location of your choice whether that be at your place of work, education or even from home. Someone else can also attend the appointment on your behalf. If you have a genuine reason for not being able to make one of the available appointments, then please contact us to discuss.
