There are many key parts that make up a vehicle and replacing them can often come with a large bill. In this guide, we look at timing chains.

Every engine has crucial components that ensure that the vehicle moves, brakes, and continues to work for a long period of time.

In this car maintenance guide, we reveal all you need to know, how much it costs to replace them, and what the signs are for any potential faults.

What is a timing chain?

A timing chain is a durable metal component inside a car engine that synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring valves open and close at the right time during combustion when the engine is turned on.

Unlike rubber timing belts, chains last longer but still require proper lubrication in order to work correctly.

If worn or stretched, they can cause rattling noises, misfires, or severe engine damage.

Regular oil changes and inspections help maintain performance – which often occurs during your vehicle’s annual service.

With good care and servicing, timing chains often last the lifetime of the vehicle, making them vital for reliability.

How much does it cost to replace a timing chain?

Replacing a timing chain can be quite costly, with the price varying based on your car’s make, model, and the complexity of the job.

While the expense may feel high, it’s a crucial repair to prevent severe engine damage that could lead to even greater costs.

On average, according to the latest RAC data, a timing chain replacement typically ranges between £750 and £1,000.

Common timing chain faults

A mechanic will know when your timing chain needs replacing as it will likely cause further problems when driving.

Over time the chain can stretch, wear and the tension can fail – all of which will lead to engine misfire, ratting noises, and severe engine damage.

Here are some of the other faults to look out for:

  • Teeth on the camshaft can wear down over time, making it slip and cause misalignment in the engine
  • Insufficient lubrication can cause a timing chain to be damaged
  • If the chain slips a tooth, the engine’s timing is thrown off, causing it to stall

When do I need to change my timing chain?

Timing chains can remain in top working order throughout the lifespan of a vehicle.

However, they normally need to be replaced every 80,000 to 120,000 miles.

Of course, this can vary due to driving style and level of maintenance carried out on the vehicle every year.Be wary of any signs of potential issues, as ignoring it could lead to a larger repair bill – and damage other crucial components in the engine.
