Guide to steering rack replacements: cost, symptoms, and diagnostics

There are a lot of mechanical and technical parts that make a vehicle function properly on the roads – and one of them is the steering rack.

A vehicle’s steering system is one of the most safety-critical parts of a car – and if there is an issue, it must be resolved immediately.

In this car maintenance guide, we look at steering racks, the common faults, and how much it will cost to replace one.

What is a steering rack?

A steering rack is a crucial component of a vehicle's steering system. It is used in modern cars to convert the rotational movement of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels.

The steering rack is a long metal bar, and the pinion is a small gear that meshes with the teeth on the rack.

When you turn the steering wheel, it rotates the pinion, which then moves the rack left or right.

The rack itself is attached to the steering arms of the vehicle's wheels, and as the rack moves, it pushes or pulls these arms, causing the wheels to turn in the desired direction.

However, in the vast majority of modern vehicles, steering racks are equipped with either hydraulic or electric power steering to make turning the wheel easier.

Steering rack common problems and symptoms

There are several common problems that can occur with steering racks. Here are the symptoms related to steering rack issues:

Leaking fluid

The steering rack may develop hydraulic leaks, particularly in the seals or hoses linked to the system. Car owners will likely see fluid spots on the driveway or under the vehicle. They will also notice how difficult it is to turn the steering wheel immediately after starting the engine.

Difficulty steering

The steering rack might wear out or become damaged over time, causing resistance when turning the wheel. It will feel heavy or harder to turn, especially at low speeds – and will normally be accompanied with a grinding noise while turning.

Unusual sounds coming from the engine

Worn or damaged parts within the steering rack, such as the bearings, can cause high pitched or grinding noises.

Vibrations and misaligned steering wheel

If a steering rack is misaligned to the rest of the steering components, it can lead to uneven or unstable handling. As a result, the steering wheel will vibrate or feel loose while driving. In some cases, it will feel like the vehicle pulls to one side. When the driver parks the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead, if there is a faulty steering rack the steering wheel may not return to centre if there is an issue.

Uneven tyre wear

Although this could be a sign of other issues, misalignment caused by steering rack issues can lead to uneven tyre wear. If the car feels like it is pulling to one side, then it will likely cause further tyre damage.

Can you repair a steering rack?

Yes, a steering rack can be repaired, but it depends on the nature and extent of the damage.

It is advisable to take your vehicle to an approved garage to get it fixed. Here are the main options when dealing with a faulty steering rack and what the mechanic will do.

Minor repairs

If the issue with your steering rack is severe, such as a leaking seal, some garages can replace the damaged parts individually.

They will also reseal any areas where there might be a leak and check over the surrounding area for other minor damage.

This option can be more cost-effective, especially if the steering rack itself is in good condition.

Rebuild and replace components

In some cases, mechanics will offer to rebuilding the steering rack system. They will take apart the steering rack, inspect all its components, and replace only the damaged parts.

Rebuilding can be a good middle ground between repairing and replacing the entire steering rack, often saving costs while restoring functionality.

The steering, braking, and wider engine components can be very complicated pieces of machinery and will need an expert to know what the issue is and if it needs to be replaced.

Maintaining your vehicle is essential. When it's time for repairs or maintenance, you'll want to ensure you're receiving high-quality service at a fair price.
