EGR valve replacement – cost and symptoms
Consumer Editor
Content guide
Modern vehicles have many components that relate to its tailpipe emissions – and one of the most important is the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
In this car maintenance guide, we look at the average EGR replacement cost, as well as any common problems you may experience.

What is an EGR valve?
An EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is a vital component in modern engines that helps reduce harmful tailpipe emissions when driving.
It works by diverting a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake system, where it mixes with fresh air and fuel.
After this, the recycled gas lowers the temperature of combustion, which in turn reduces the production of nitrogen oxides, which are the pollutants that form when engines run very hot – especially when travelling over longer distances.
The valve only opens when conditions are right, usually during steady driving or moderate engine load.
However, when the vehicle is idle, or during cold starts, or under heavy acceleration, it stays closed so the engine can run smoothly and maintain power – as well as helping the vehicle get up to the correct temperature.
Depending on the vehicle, an EGR valve may operate using either vacuum control or an electric actuator.
If you are unsure, and you know there is an issue with your exhaust, then you will need to speak to a mobile mechanic.
Overall, an EGR helps the engine burn more cleanly, meet emissions standards, and in some cases even improves fuel efficiency.
How much does a EGR valve replacement cost?
The average cost to replace a EGR vale is around £372.
This total can vary due to a variety of factors including the make, model, and age of the vehicle – as well as where you live or have the work carried out by a mechanic or at a garage.

Common EGR valve issues
A failing EGR valve can be a serious problem and often starts with subtle performance changes over time.
As soot, dirt and residue accumulate, the valve can no longer control exhaust flow properly.
This leads to temperature imbalances in the combustion and exhaust process, causing rough driving behaviour, increased emissions, and some more serious engine issues. Symptoms include:
- Rough or shaky idling caused by exhaust gases entering the intake at the wrong time
- Hesitation or reduced power during acceleration due to incorrect air-fuel balance
- Higher fuel consumption as the engine works harder to compensate for poor combustion
- Dashboard warning lights triggered by irregular exhaust flow or sensor readings
- Knocking or pinging noises when combustion becomes too hot and uncontrolled
- Failing emissions tests because the engine produces excess pollutants
