New registrations of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) dropped by 7.8% in January 2026, with 17,562 vans, pickups and 4x4s entering service, according to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This buying and selling guide will profile the top 10 most popular vans in the UK.

This month marks the weakest January performance since 2012, when 16,049 vehicles were registered, and highlights the impact of a challenging economic climate and subdued business confidence on fleet spending.

The sharpest decline came from the pickup sector, which plunged 57.0% to 1,206 units.

This follows recent government tax changes that classify double‑cab pickups as cars for benefit‑in‑kind and capital allowance purposes, an adjustment the industry had warned would increase costs for buyers.

Medium vans also saw a significant fall, down 27.4% to 2,547 units, while small vans slipped 39.8% to just 402 registrations. Growth was limited to large vans, which rose 10.0% to 12,696 units, and 4x4s, which increased 33.9% to 711.

Electric van registrations provided a rare bright spot, climbing 26.0% to 1,844 units. However, with EVs representing only 10.4% of the market, demand would need to more than double to meet the mandated 24% target for 2026.

The industry’s latest forecast for 2026 has been revised downward, with expectations now set at 321,000 LCV registrations for the year. While this still represents a 1.9% increase over 2025, it is notably lower than the 335,000 projected in the October outlook.

Similarly, although battery‑electric vans are still expected to see strong growth, their anticipated market share has been reduced from 14.0% to 13.1%.
