-
Under the bonnet
– Battery and charging system check
– Cooling system check
– Engine oil and filter change
– Fuel filter check
– Air filter replacement
– Power steering fluid top-up
-
Exterior checks
– Steering and suspension
– Wheels and tyres
– Brakes
– Front and rear lights
– Exhaust
– Mechanical parts
– Wipers
– Wiper fluid top up
-
Safety feature checks
– Horn
– Seatbelts
– Seatbelt mounts
-
Full diagnostic check
We’ll plug into your onboard engine management systems using our specialist diagnostic computer. We’ll then run a full engine management system check, looking for electrical issues and any problems flagged up by the electric control units on the engine, the power steering, transmission, sensors and more. A vehicle diagnostic check is usually worth around £65† on its own.

Full error report and advice on repairs
If we detect any issues, we'll talk through what needs to be repaired. We’ll give you a no-obligation quote to fix it on the spot, if we can. Or we’ll recommend a local RAC Approved Garage, and give you a full error report to take there.
And it’s not just services and diagnostics
Our mobile mechanics can replace your springs, oil and filters, or brake pads and discs. Or they can give your car a full vehicle health check. All without going to a garage.
What happens on the day?
Make sure your car’s parked on a flat even surface at your home or work, isn’t on the road and your mechanic can access all sides.
Your mechanic will call when they’re on the way.
Hand over your keys, and they’ll get to work on your car.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is a mobile mechanic?
A mobile mechanic operates out of a van, instead of a garage. This means they can come to you to carry out repairs or servicing – instead of the other way around. For example, they can service your car at your home or work – whichever is more convenient. And if it turns out that you need a more complex repair when they arrive, they can recommend a garage to you.
Q. How can I find a mobile mechanic?
You can find mobile mechanics online through aggregator websites or local mechanics offering mobile services, but it’s important to find one from a brand you can trust.
To find a trusted RAC Mobile Mechanic, just enter your postcode and we’ll look for one near you. At the moment, our mobile mechanics are only available in certain parts of the UK.
Q. What can a mobile mechanic do?
Most mobile mechanics can do standard servicing checks and repairs like changing your oil or replacing your brake pads.
RAC Mobile Mechanics can carry out full services, interim services, full diagnostic checks and oil changes. They can also make some repairs, including replacing your brakes, springs and filters.
Q. How much is a mobile mechanic?
The cost of a mobile mechanic depends on the kind of repair or service you need.
With RAC Mobile Mechanics you can get a full service from just £205†, and an oil change from £152†. The best way to get an idea of cost is to get a quote.
Q. Can a mobile mechanic come to my place of work?
Yes, our mobile mechanics can come to your workplace, as long as your car’s parked on a flat, even surface, isn’t on the road, and your mechanic can access all sides.
We can also come to your home if it’s more convenient.
Q. Do I need to be at home during the repair or service?
Your mobile mechanic needs to get your car keys from yourself or someone acting on your behalf.
But once they have your keys, you can carry on with your day. On the day, they’ll call when they’re on the way to make arrangements.
Q. Can mobile mechanics do MOTs?
Our mobile mechanics can’t carry out MOTs. But we do have a network of local RAC Approved Garages that can do MOTs.
Q. Do car mechanics come to your house?
Most mechanics work out of a garage, but you can get special mobile mechanics who’ll come to your house to look at your car.
If you need a service or repair, RAC mobile mechanics will come to you, whether it’s your home or workplace. Next day bookings are available, so you could be sorted sooner than you think.
Q. How do I find trustworthy local mechanics?
Whether you’re getting a service or a repair, it’s important to find a mechanic you can trust. Your best option is to find a mechanic or garage who are trained or endorsed by a respected brand.
RAC Mobile Mechanics are fully trained by the RAC, one of the most trusted motoring brands in the UK. Or for garage work, look for RAC Approved Garages – they’re regularly inspected by the RAC, and they work to a code of conduct developed and approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.
Q. What’s included in a full service?
We’ll check your brakes, battery, tyres, steering, suspension, radiator, lights, wipers and more, just like in an interim service. And on top of that, we’ll also carry out a full charging system test, check your engine bay pipes and hoses, inspect your air filter and replace it if necessary, and run a full diagnostic test to check for any hidden problems.
And as with an interim service, we’ll also change your engine oil and oil filter, and make sure your brake fluid and windscreen wash are topped up.
Plus we’ll top up your power steering fluid if it’s running low. And as with an interim service, we’ll run a general road test before and after to make sure everything’s working properly.
Q. How long will a full service take?
In general, our mobile mechanics aim to complete a full service within 1 hour 45 minutes. But depending on things like what car you have and where it’s parked, it can sometimes take longer.
For example, on some types of car it might be harder to access the oil filter. And if the car isn’t parked in a safe location it might need to be moved, which takes time. We’ll let you know roughly how long we think it will take on the day, to make sure it’s as convenient as possible.
We might notice additional repairs your car needs during the service. If so, we’ll quote for this work – if we can do it on the same day, and you’re happy with this, we’ll do this extra work after your service. Of course that can add to the time it takes to work on your car.
Q. Does the full service include the gearbox oil change?
Our full service doesn’t include a gearbox oil change – just a standard oil change and oil filter change.
But it’s easy to have your gearbox oil changed at an RAC Approved Garage.
Q. What’s included in an interim service?
We’ll check your brakes, battery, steering, suspension, wheels and tyres, as well as your radiator, lights, wipers and more.
Our mobile mechanics will also change your engine oil and oil filter, and make sure your brake fluid and windscreen wash are topped up.
We’ll run a general road test before and after the service, to make sure everything’s working properly.
Q. How long will an interim service take?
We aim to complete an interim service in around 1 hour.
But if your car is a specific model with hard-to-access parts, or it needs to be moved to a more suitable location for the service, it can take longer.
To help make your interim service as quick as possible, make sure your car’s parked on a flat surface, somewhere safe and easily accessible.
Q. What’s included in an oil change?
It’s important to get your oil changed regularly, to make sure your engine is running efficiently and prevent damage.
An oil and filter change will take about 50 minutes. We’ll look for any leaks, then drain your engine oil and refill it with the grade and type of oil recommended by the manufacturer (or higher). We’ll also change your oil filter at the same time.
Q. How long will an oil change take?
We usually aim to change your oil within 60 minutes. But it can take longer, depending on various factors like the make and model of your car.
If we think it's likely to take longer, we'll keep you updated on the day. If you need your car back by a certain time, please let your mobile mechanic know.
To make your oil change as quick as possible, make sure you're parked on a flat surface, somewhere that's safe and easily accessible on all sides. Otherwise we may need to move your car, which can delay the oil change.
Q. What oil is used?
We’ll always use the grade and specification of oil that your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends, at no extra cost.
This makes sure your warranties are still valid. Many providers charge extra for larger vehicles, like vans, that might need more oil.
But we won’t charge you more for any additional oil that you need. No matter what type of vehicle you have.
Q. Can I add an MOT on my full service?
Our mobile mechanics can’t complete an MOT – an MOT requires specialist equipment that means it needs to be done in a garage.
If you want a full service from a mobile mechanic and an MOT, let us know when booking your service.
We’ll send you details about your closest RAC Approved Garage, so you can then book your MOT for another day.
Q. Are there any Blue Light Card discounts?
We don't have any exclusive offers on mobile mechanic work for Blue Light Card at the moment.
But we do have Blue Light Card discounts on lots of our other products, like UK breakdown cover and European breakdown cover.
Q. If there are any problems after the service, who would I contact?
Our mobile mechanics undergo vigorous training, and we fit quality parts with a 12-month guarantee.
But if you do experience any problems, we’re on hand to help. Just call our team on 0333 070 2784 or email [email protected]. Lines are open 9-5, Monday to Friday, and we aim to respond to any email queries within 48 hours.
Q. Are the parts used OEM?
Yes. We use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standard parts, which means every new part will be the same standard and same quality as the original part it replaced.
Plus all work comes with a 12-month parts guarantee, so if anything does go wrong with a part, we’ll replace it for free – leaving you with complete peace of mind.
Q. What oil filter brand is used?
In the majority of cases we aim to use Bosch oil filters. If they aren’t available for any reason, we’ll always use a filter of equal or higher standard.
Q. Do I get an invoice and paperwork?
Yes. Once we’ve finished repair work, you’ll get a full post-repair report, along with an invoice.
With a full service, you’ll get a full service sheet breakdown which lists any further work your car might need now or in the near future.
We’ll also talk this through with you on the day to give you complete peace of mind.
Q. Will I get a booking confirmation?
Yes. Once you’ve picked your mobile mechanic or approved garage, they’ll get in touch to confirm a date and time for the job, and send you a confirmation.
Q. Would it be possible for the mechanic to use my oil? I’ve already purchased some
We only use high-quality parts and oils, to make sure our work is of the highest quality – and that your warranty is still valid.
That means we won’t use oil we haven’t supplied ourselves, as we can’t guarantee its quality.
Q. Can I also get a gearbox oil change from my mobile mechanic?
It depends on your vehicle.
Many modern gearboxes can’t be accessed without specialist equipment, which means you may need to go to an RAC Approved Garage to get yours replaced.
Q. Do you take credit card?
Yes. We accept all major credits cards except American Express.
Q. Can you upload the service history on the onboard computer, and reset my service messages?
We can reset service message intervals on your dashboard, but at the moment we aren’t able to upload the service history.
