Ultra-fast 1,000kW ‘Flash Chargers’ from Chinese car manufacturer BYD are set to roll out across the UK in 2026, marking a major step forward in the country's electric vehicle infrastructure.
The new fast chargers could significantly reduce charging times for EVs, potentially adding hundreds of miles of range in just a few minutes.
In fact, earlier this year, BYD revealed that it has developed its own ultra-fast EV charger capable of delivering up to 1 megawatt (1,000 kW) of power.
This charger can add approximately 1.2 miles of range per second, providing up to 249 miles of range in just five minutes – matching the refuelling speed of traditional petrol vehicles.
The introduction of such high-speed charging technology is expected to make EV ownership more convenient and appealing.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, BYD Special Advisor Alfredo Altavilla confirmed that the first of the company’s Flash Chargers will arrive in the UK next year, adding that BYD aims to compete directly with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
Altavilla said: “In 2026. You will get a few stations in every country in Europe. They will be branded BYD, but they will be open to everybody.”
While Flash Chargers will be accessible to all electric vehicle owners, only vehicles equipped to handle megawatt-level charging will benefit from the highest charging speeds.
BYD’s new Super e-Platform incorporates a 1,000V high-voltage architecture paired with a Flash Charging Battery, debuting first in the Han L and Tang L models now available for order in China.
In Europe and the UK, this advanced battery technology is expected to launch in a new model from Denza.
Denza vehicles will serve as the platform for introducing BYD’s latest innovations across the region, alongside high-performance sports cars and SUVs from its premium brand, Yangwang.
