How long does it take to replace starter motor?

Replacing a starter motor should only be carried out by an experience mobile mechanic or at your trusted local garage.

The process can take up to four hours – however, this can be affected by the make, model, size, age, design, and engine layout.

Some cars have the starter motor at the base of the engine and so are easier to get to – but in some vehicles, they are based in the centre of the engine components.

Signs your starter motor needs replacing

Before you take your vehicle to see a mechanic, these are the signs you should look out for with your faulty starter motor:

  • Clicking sound when starting the engine
  • Dashboard warning lights illuminating (specifically check engine light)
  • Grinding sounds and feeling when initially moving the vehicle
  • Smoke and burning smell coming from the engine
  • Nothing happens when you turn the key or start the engine
