The Motability scheme is one of Europe’s biggest fleet operators, providing vehicles to around 860,000 disabled people across the UK.

It’s a charitable organisation, working alongside the UK government to enable disabled people receiving a mobility allowance to exchange it for a lease on a new car. This provides much needed independence, allowing them to easily access work, education and healthcare.

The scheme, founded in 1977, is now so successful that it was estimated that one in five new cars went to Motability in 2024.

Recently, Motability changed what brands and cars it offers on the scheme. Since 25th November 2025, 'premium' brands such as Audi, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz are no longer offered, while coupe and convertible cars from other brands have also been removed.

From 2035, Motability wants half of all vehicles leased on the scheme to be British-built, too.

So, what are the best and most popular cars on Motability today? We’ve compiled data supplied from the scheme showing what cars customers are choosing the most in 2026.

All these cars can be installed with features such as swivelling seats, hoists, steering aids and hand controls. These ensure many disabilities can be catered for, making the most of your mobility allowance.

Best Motability cars FAQs

A Motability vehicle is a vehicle leased through the Motability Scheme, a charitable organisation designed to help disabled people gain mobility and independence. Those with a qualifying disability allowance can exchange their monthly payment for a lease on a new vehicle, with costs such as insurance, maintenance, servicing and breakdown cover included as part of the Motability lease.

The best cars on the Motability scheme depend on your needs, both in terms of the size and equipment of the car and whether your disability affects your mobility. However some of the most popular Motability cars include the Peugeot 2008, Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai, showing that SUVs are the favoured body style.

Leasing a car on the Motability scheme gives you a variety of benefits over traditional car leases. Insurance, tax, breakdown cover, tyre and windscreen replacement, maintenance and servicing are all included. Any adaptations needed for a disabled person to drive the car can also be added at no extra charge.
