Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance anywhere in the UK 24 hours a day, 365 days a year providing you are at least a quarter of a mile from home.

If we can't fix your car at the roadside within a reasonable time, then we'll give you a tow to a nearby garage within a 10-mile radius.

Nationwide recovery

If we can't fix your vehicle locally, we'll provide Recovery for up to 8 people to any UK destination.

At Home

Breakdown assistance within a quarter of a mile of your home.

Accident Care*

As an RAC member you are also covered for Accident Care in case you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a traffic accident in the UK. Accident Care covers the following services which you can use from the roadside (or later) by phoning 0800 096 6999†.

  • Ask our advice - For advice about what to do in the event of an accident - such as whether to phone the police, how to talk to the other party, and what details to take - just ask!

  • Is your vehicle safe to drive? - We will take you through a checklist to work out how safe your vehicle is.

  • Who is liable? - Providing you supply us with sufficient information, we will give you an on-the-spot liability assessment.

  • Legal Advice - Uninsured losses, repair problems, the best value for a write-off or disputes - we can advise you on a whole range of legal problems.

  • Need a replacement vehicle? - If you are not liable (and, subject to a charge, in certain other circumstances) we can organise a temporary replacement vehicle of a similar class (subject to vehicle supplier and insurance company terms and conditions).

  • Injured? - As an RAC Member you are entitled to £50,000 of Legal Expenses Cover. This cover will fund the legal costs of pursuing a claim for you or your passengers for personal injury compensation that arises out of a road traffic accident. This cover is subject to the RAC Accident Care Personal Injury Cover policy summary and full terms & conditions.

  • What is not covered? - We will do whatever we can to help as long as we believe you have a reasonable case, but if the service you require goes beyond the scope of the service, or if we'd incur unreasonable costs on your behalf (for instance, if your claim is disputed by your insurer), we retain the right to refuse assistance. This will not affect your membership with us for any other services.
Please remember we may obtain goods or services on your behalf from third parties and will not be responsible for your relationship with these parties (insurance companies, lawyers and garages for instance, unless we notify you otherwise). Always read the small print in any contract you enter before signing.
Some times there are extra charges for services we arrange. We will tell you beforehand of any extra costs.
Accident Care is not an insurance policy

For more information about the Accident Care service call free on 0800 096 6999†.

† Calls may be recorded for training purposes. Calls from mobile phones may be charged by your network.

*Full service depends on whether in our judgement the accident was fault or non fault. Charges may apply for services we arrange on your behalf.

Onward Travel

Alternative transport or accommodation

  • Provides a Personal Incident Manager who, if we can't repair your car within a reasonable time, will arrange for: a replacement car for up to three days while yours is being repaired; or overnight accommodation; or onward travel by taxi or plane (up to a maximum value of £150 per head or £500 for a group). In addition, messages can be passed on, informing anyone who needs to know that you've broken down.

  • Onward Travel will also cover medical assistance (including an ambulance) if required. If the driver of your vehicle (not necessarily you) is certified ill and no one else is able to drive it, we'll take you to any UK destination.

  • The Onward Travel option can be added later to RAC membership. (Onward Travel is only available with Recovery.)

  • Onward Travel is available 24 hours after joining.

Repair referrals

Included in your RAC breakdown cover, this service offers a complete solution to a breakdown that can't be fixed at the roadside.

If your vehicle is beyond roadside repair, there are two options:

  • The RAC patrol can tow you to a destination of your choice based on your level of cover

  • Alternatively, the patrol can contact our network of approved repairers to find out if a local garage is available to do the work

    • If there is a local garage available you'll get a quote for the work based on the patrol's diagnosis. You can still select the tow option at this point

    • If you choose to be taken to the garage, we will tow you there. Once there, you will be treated as a priority customer. The garage will confirm the suspected diagnosis, or give a new one

    • If you have Recovery as part of your package, you may request a tow to a destination of your choice within the UK if there is any change to the estimated cost or timing of the repair

    • Any repairs undertaken will be subject to separate terms and conditions between you and the network of approved repairers

    • Upon authorisation of payment from you, the garage undertakes the repairs, provides you with a 12-month nationwide warranty and in most cases, cleans your car inside and out
