During an hour-long speeding check carried out by Essex Police, more than 180 offences were recorded – with three drivers clocked in at over 100mph.
Head of Roads Policing and Operational Policing Command at Essex Police, Adam Pipe, stated that one of his officers who was leading the checks on the A21 between Chelmsford and Witham caught drivers travelling at speeds of 140mph, 121mph, and 110mph.
As a result, they will all receive a court summons for speeding.
Following the speed checks in the area Pipe said: "It's totally unacceptable and is putting road users, as well as themselves, at risk of serious injury or death.
"I'm horrified to see drivers reaching twice the legal speed limit on our roads. We've seen a number of serious collisions on our roads this year, with people losing their lives.
"I urge people to think about the consequences of driving too fast and the irreparable damage that can be caused. Don't resort to speeding, it's never worth the devastating cost."
In response, he revealed that Essex Police were patrolling the road networks in the region 24 hours a day to try and catch drivers breaking the speed limits.
The road checks were carried out on Friday 6th June 2025.
- Speed limits in the UK – know the laws
- Excessive speeding now commonplace across the UK
- Speeding fines – how much will you have to pay?
Currently, the police in the area are asking for the public to help tackle the problem of speeding through its Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s Extra Eyes initiative.
Footage captured can be used to fight illegal and irresponsible driving and will be reviewed by an investigator within Road Policing before it is escalated to court proceedings.
However, neither the Safer Essex Roads Partnership nor Essex Police will support or encourage anyone to proactively seek out examples of poor driving.
Drivers should always consider their own driving and conduct before making any submissions.
Essex Police Staff are not able to discuss the outcome of any submissions with the person who sent in the footage.
