Majority of drivers want wider parking bays across the UK

UK drivers say that wider parking bays are the top improvement needed to make parking easier.
A recent survey from YourParkingSpace revealed that nearly half of drivers (48%) want larger spaces.
With SUVs now dominating the market, eight of the UK’s ten best‑selling cars are SUVs, many vehicles struggle to fit into traditional bays.
One in five drivers (21%) reported damage from another car parked too close.
Width is a growing challenge for people trying to park, as popular family cars and SUVs leaving little spare for doors to open.
Beyond size, 46% of drivers want lower parking costs, while 34% value guaranteed spaces.
Just nine percent believe more electric vehicle charging points would improve their parking experience.

Typical UK parking spaces measure 4.8 metres long and 2.4 metres wide. These dimensions were introduced around 50 years ago when cars were smaller.
Since then, vehicles such as SUVs, estate cars, and vans have grown significantly, making standard bays tighter.
Parking sizes vary by purpose in the UK.
Long‑stay spaces are slightly wider at 2.5 metres, while short‑stay bays are narrower at 2.3 metres to maximise capacity.
Disabled bays are much larger at 3.6 metres wide, and parent/child spaces measure 3.2 metres, both designed for easier wheelchair and pushchair access.
These recommendations are set by the Government, as well as UK engineering and transport institutions.
Larne O’Donoghue, spokesperson at YourParkingSpace, said: “This research tells us that space and comfort are now top priorities when parking – not just price.
“Many car parks are working with layouts that were designed decades ago, and that mismatch is clearly being felt by today’s motorists.
“While national guidelines may take time to evolve, we’re finding that drivers are already adapting by planning ahead, choosing locations carefully, and prioritising convenience when deciding where to park.”
