Could SUV drivers be set to pay more to drive in London?
Consumer Editor
SUV drivers across London could soon face charges to drive across the capital, after a review into the dangers of larger vehicles exposed the risks to pedestrians.
Transport for London (TfL) is reportedly considering new measures aimed at reducing road danger, which could include introducing charges for the largest vehicles later in the year.
This follows a similar move in Cardiff in October 2025.
Officials in councils across London are also looking at expanding the number of 20mph zones and lowering speed limits on some of London’s faster roads to improve safety.
Recent analysis highlighted how large SUVs pose heightened risks to people outside the vehicle, especially children.
According to the Guardian, findings referenced in London’s latest Vision Zero safety plan note that pedestrians and cyclists face a significantly higher chance of fatal injury when struck by an SUV compared with a smaller car.
The greater height, weight and front-end design of these vehicles can lead to more severe impacts, increasing the likelihood that someone hit will suffer critical injuries or be thrown into traffic.
A spokesperson for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, told The Guardian: “There is growing evidence about the safety risks of large SUVs, which are becoming more common on London’s roads.
“It’s a startling figure that SUVs are 77% more likely to kill a child if involved in a collision.
“The mayor has asked TfL to undertake detailed analysis of the safety risks posed by large SUVs and their wider impact on London’s roads.
“This could then inform any future policy proposals in London or recommendations to government or the sector.”
