Unsafe roof boxes: could you be facing a £2,500 fine this summer?
New research into British drivers who use roof boxes for their staycations, has found that only half of them are confident in securely fitting them before a road trip.

For those travelling with families, or those also needing to take extra items, roof boxes are a useful accessory.

eBay surveyed 2,000 motorists ahead of their summer holidays to see how confident they were about keeping their vehicle safe ahead of travelling.

According to the results, nearly a third (31%) now own a rood box – but only half (51%) of them are confident in securing it to their vehicle.

Furthermore, only 7% of those who took part in the survey would check to see if a full packed roof box was securely fitted and mounted before carrying on with their driving.

For drivers who will be using a roof box this summer, failing to properly secure a roof box can lead to a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on a driving licence.

This is because it contravenes Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Only 58% were aware of the potential fine or points when it comes to fitting roof racks.

When it comes to preparing for a road trip, the eBay survey also looked at regular car maintenance.

Almost three-quarters of those surveyed (70%) stated that they would be checking their tyre pressure before setting off.

And only 62% would be looking at oil and fluid levels.

Soaring temperatures this July has seen the RAC reporting up to 20% more failures than usual for this time of year.

The combination of extreme heat and drivers making the most of the summer weather over the weekend will put further strain on cars and vans, making breakdowns more likely.

So, being prepared before setting off on your summer adventure has never been more important.

RAC breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “We’re seeing a surge in breakdowns as this latest period of hot weather takes hold, with up to 20% more vehicles failing than expected at this point in July.

“Drivers should do whatever they can to avoid their vehicles letting them down in these conditions – oil and coolant levels, as well as tyres, must be checked before journeys are made.

“If anything isn’t right, get the problem diagnosed by a mobile mechanic or reputable garage, rather than running the risk of driving.

“Taking plenty of breaks on long journeys, to give themselves and their cars a rest, is also important.

“Staying safe in the heat, especially if a breakdown is unavoidable, should be in the mind of every driver.

“Carrying plenty of water for all passengers is a must, as is keeping sunscreen and a sun hat or even umbrella to hand to reduce the ferocity of the sun. When waiting for assistance, look for a safe location in the shade and well away from moving traffic."
