RAC Satnav support - including Updated Maps / Safety Camera Updates

    Watching is not joining date.

Anyway - I agree - no need for this negative banter, not acheiving anything.
I apologise if it is has offended anyone. There just seems to be a lot of slur and rediculous comments on this forum about things which I never found to be a problem.

I received my Q3 2008 Mapping yesterday, changed cards, performed the safety camera update, which worked first time. Everything tickety-boo.

To this end, I am happy with the unit now until at least the end of 2010.

I am not concerned with the safety camera update. I have a set of POIs which show Accident Black Spots. I have found that on 'most' major A roads, where there is an Accident Black Spot shown, there is also a camera. However, I was quite surprised to find so many of them on motorways, although the majority are at or approaching junctions. On minor A roads and B roads, there is very little apparent correlation between Accident Black Spots and the positioning of cameras. Just something I have noticed.

In response to Clkgtrlm1, I do not have any letters behind me, but can say I have been, and still remain in, a profession where saying something requires delivery of what was said by me or having the strength to say and mean 'sorry' or 'I cannot deliver because', not simply keeping quiet or fobbing someone off. To me it is rediculous when company representatives act in that way after a customer has bought one of their products. I also took time to read the posts before 'shaking a handbag' following your comment to 'c+ck off'. I would have thought that your qualifications, whatever they mean, would have given you the common sense to view those posts I refered to which evidenced my views, and those of other people, since I started contributing to this thread. Had you done that, I would have been surprised you would have taken the time to make that posting. Your comment did not offend me, it surprised me. You may not be concerned about the actions of The Satnav Team, their actions have annoyed me and as I have said, I am not one to sit back and accept it, I would not act as they have done and continue to do. I found this site when I started to look for map updates, I was directed here by a well known search engine, I have no doubt there are many other people out there who have come across this site and have read it's postings, perhaps the contents of which have directed them to another product. 'The Satnav Team' only have themselves to blame if that has happened. I agree, these comments are not achieving anything, because they still remain silent!
What do I want out of all these comments?
Well the Satnav Team have finally provided the new maps, just for them to accept they should have told us the facts from point one and not fobbed us off. Provide the update at a fair price, one which takes into account the cost of producing the update the cost of the sd card and the cost of delivery. I accept they are in a business and are there to make money, not give it away, but lets be fair about it all. After all we have shown our commitment to them by buying their product in the first place.

If you have a specific question please ask. If not, please stop deliberately trying to cause bad blood between forum users.

The facts of the matter are that you complained that updates were not available so I made them available. You complained that the updates were late so I tried to hurry them up. The updates are available to order and you now complain that the postage is too much (or are you complaining that I didn't make it clear how much the postage charge was? I'm not sure). You are, of course, still to actually purchase an update I presume?

Honestly binlid, I have no idea why you are continually allowed to post. Forums promote free speech and promote feedback, generally forums are very positive for the brand and the consumer but your posts seem to have no foundation or substance. There are many forum users that have contacted me personally and I have helped them with their problem (incidentally this includes Gerry who had a genuine problem that I was happy to solve). If you, or anyone else on the forum, wants to speak to me directly I can be contacted on the help line on the reverse of your sat nav - 01302 720006.

Get in touch on the number on the back of your sat-nav unit...

You will get the official take on this regarding issues like whether the update is available or no, at what price, what will be the postage etc

    Good luck !

Dear RAC sat nav team, you are right it is a forum which allows free speech, that is what I am doing, if I have broken any rules, then I am sure I would have been blocked or my entries removed. I am disapointed by your customer service and attitude and I am expressing those feelings supported by evidence on the thread. I am surprised you think I have done wrong.
The facts of the matter are I phoned the office asking for updated maps, I was told an approximate date and that just went on and on. Why did you not say, 'sorry, no idea when they will be available.' Or 'we had not given it a thought that people would want updated maps.'
Lets be honest, nothing was happening until the comments started to roll in from numerous people and someone decided to actually do something and get them sorted. (You complained they were not available so I made them available)
Re my comments having no foundation or substance, please read through this thread. I do not know if you have taken time to read the thread, may I refer you to posts 137, where Al Catraz states updated maps are due soon. Gerry goes on to say August, (page 14). Look at 185 from blade runner. Another from Sparky1966 in post 186 on page 19 and finally Gerry on posts 189 dated 2/9/08 and 242 dated 3/12/08 say it all. Etc, etc. Evidence to support my comments.
I do not see a need to call your office because as already stated by another user and experienced by myself, 'nice words, nothing much else'. I think you have done an attrocious job. I accept there may be some users who think you have done a great job. But I do not moan about their contributions. It is free speech.
Had users not made contributions which provide the evidence for my posts I do wonder how long owners would have been waiting for the new maps. You are right, I have not called the number on the back of the unit to order updated maps because I suspect it will be a waste of money, in any event my car supply lead has got to a stage where it will work when it sees fit and I dread to think what the cost of that will be. Yes a top of the range item which one user paid over £360 for. Quality branded product...not. You say I am creating bad blood between forum users, the bad blood is there in numerous postings for all to see made by many other users, all as a result of the customer service and poor quality of the RAC branded product. I have not made all of the postings in this thread. You just do not have the strength to admit you could do much better.
I do wonder how much profit is being made out of these updates.
Specific question...How much the company has paid for the sd cards etc? Go on, give us a break down of the true costs, I dare you!
I guess you are working on the theory that you have a captive audience who will buy at any price.
Final specific question, would you be prepared to take in my unit as part ex against a new model? That is one I have asked many times but you have chosen to ignore. Once again, excellent communication skills.

OK, please give one example of me giving bad customer service and please supply the thread number as evidence. I apologise in advance and will correct it immediately.

Mapping updates are supplied by the software company, Route66, and we are at their mercy with regards to availability and also production times. We have always tried to give the most accurate information about expected dates and have always apologised for any delays. We always try to supply mapping upgrades when the demand is high enough. I tried to bring these updates in early because people like yourself complained about the lack of availability. Unfortunately, the fact that I tried to hurry the process caused problems and therefore delays.

These posts you refer to are all old posts. Each problem has been rectified and the poster is now happy. You are not offering any evidence by quoting old posts that are no longer relevant, you are offering an argument with no foundation or substance.

This is completely irrelevant to this forum but I will answer. As I have already stated, mapping upgrades are supplied, and therefore the prices dictated by, Route66. The upgrades do not make a profit.

If it were not possible for you to update the sat nav the answer would be yes, absolutely. But the sat nav does have updates available so your question is unreasonable and therefore my answer is no, sorry.

The RAC220 is an excellent sat nav with many features that cannot be reproduced in todays market. There is no way that we could fit a sat nav into the current price range that has European maps, Bluetooth, MP3, TMC, Sirfstar technology, AVI input and a 5" screen.

I have suggested several times that you contact us directly on the help line so we can help to solve your problems. You have chosen, as you have explained, not to do this but to instead continue to be defamatory regarding our service. If you are unwilling to use the help line, please contain any unfair comments you may have about the service.

I sincerely hope that I have answered all of your questions.

    Dear RAC Satnav team.
Just look at all the posts on this thread which relate to updated map availability made by different users, look at those as a whole, just as they are all under one thread. Then reflect on your service as seen by those postings. I need not say anymore, but I will because you have asked for evidence, just read posts, 242 and 254, Gerry was told SIX times of different months to expect the updates. View posting 288 on page 29 by testmanager. There are many more. May I suggest, just speak the truth when a customer calls in, that is all you have to do. I will not retract anything I have said on my thoughts about your standard of service and I do not consider my postings to be defamatory. You may feel that to receive such comments are acceptable in the realm of customer service. I do not and there we differ. For me, the various postings on this thread made by other users speak for themselves, whether they are two years old or two minutes old. Or are you saying those postings where users have made bad comments about service are untrue? This saga has been going on for a long time!
With you stating that mapping updates are supplied and therefore prices are dictated by Route 66 then I guess you are saying that the e mail I received and posted on page 23 post number 225 is wrong and that Alina sent me incorrect information when it states that Route 66 does not provide map updates for software running on RAC Satnav devices. Left hand, right hand, who does the customer believe?
The only bad blood here is the fact that someone has spoken out and told you something you do not like to hear.
Thank you for finally responding to the question of whether you would like to buy back my unit even as a part ex.
  • Gerry's Avatar
Ok Im back, after such a long time.

Firstly I did complain at the start about the customer service on the mapping only, however I was asked to get in touch and I did and it was resolved in a really nice manner by Andrew the Manager in that I was contacted once the maps were available and I am quite happy with the way they dealt with me.

I bought a TomTom just after my comments back then and you have to pay for new maps 4 times a year at 24.99 for the UK that equates to 100.00 per year, then you have to pay for the Speed Camera alerts, also because the customer can update maps, you get a lot of bad info as they mess the maps up.

I have gone back to my RAC SatNav because it is far better quality, and I have always loved the big screen, and given my daughter my TomTom, the update for your RAC SatNav Binlid is well worth the money.

Finally BinLid £3.00 for the price of an SD card and postage next day recorded is bloody cheap we all know that we had to pay for the maps. If I did have a gripe it is that I have lost my TMC because it is not compatible with the new maps but thats a small price to pay.

I must thank Andrew and his staff for the way they dealt with my problems, and although not so good at the start, they certainly sorted it out in the end.

Therefore to the RAC team thank you very much for all your assistance especially you Andrew who constanly worked to get this sorted for me. THANK YOU. :):)

Hi Gerry, I am glad to see that you got a good result in the end, as I also had a similar outcome.;)
Its good to see positive posts on here, it balances out the bad ones:cool:
    Cheers, Smudger.
  • binlid's Avatar
Dear Gerry and Smudger, I'm glad your issues were sorted in the end.
After being asked again to explain my comments I have done so and once again, no response from the team. When I do wrong I put my hands up and and take it on the chin, I even appologise. It is all part of the learning curve and helps me to provide a better service for the future.
Gerry, can I ask, were you told six times of when to expect the updates prior to getting things sorted? If that is correct, how did you feel during all of that?
I have been criticised on this thread by the team and other users for my comments about the service we have received from the Rac satnav team. May I remind everyone the thread is titled 'updated maps/safety camera updates', I just cannot see what I have said that is wrong.
Yes the updated maps have arrived, though it has been a long journey to get here and I believe we have been lead down a few dead ends before arriving at the destination.
I guess my standards of service are higher than those of others.

    Hello all,

Regarding the subject of updating the safety camera information, where can I found the latest update for my RAC 200?

It's been a while since I last did an update but I've looked on the route 66 web-site without much success. I found something called "Route 66 Sync" but after installing it was not able to find my sat-nav. I previously downloaded something called "ROUTE 66 Safety Camera Update.exe" but cannot seem to find that anywhere.

Sorry if it's already mentioned somewhere, but I've spent a good hour looking through this topic and couldn't find it anywhere.

    Thanks for any help

    POI Files

Another newbie who's just found this forum!

I'm after finding out what format POI files I need to download to put into my RAC 215.

    Thanks
  • Rolebama's Avatar
Natsav, I don't know exactly, but my 200 takes Excel .csv files. If you put your SD card in a reader, it should be easy enough to identify them. Be aware also that if you put too many POI files in, the unit can refuse to read all of them. (The max is 65.)

I just got myself a RAC Satnav 200 from woot.com, as part of a "bag of ****", a random assortment of items that may or may not be working. In this case, my Satnav is missing a rather important component, its SD card!

It powers on and seems to "work" OK, but it's horribly limited in functionality. Tapping "Navigation" does nothing, just highlights the button and stays at the main menu. There seem to be no available settings except Calibration and About. GPS mode seems to work, but there's not a lot I can do with that.

So what I need is a maps card for this thing. Since it was originally purchased (and licensed) with a maps card, which was subsequently lost, I expect to be able to download these from somewhere without having to pay the full price of, say, a maps upgrade or something, perhaps to the tune of 10 or 15 bucks. If someone spews out that "downloading stuff is illeaaaagal" gibberish, I may as well throw this thing in the garbage.

But here's the thing: I'm in the USA, and everything I've seen for Satnav units is UK-based. Funny, considering the site is "Route 66", which is the name of a famous US highway... yet they don't offer US support at all, it seems. Is there any hope for this thing at all, or is it nothing more than a moderately expensive paperweight?

Surprisingly enough, we're not going to allow links to illegal downloads of the maps on here, whatever your personal moral stance is. The only way I know of to get the maps would be to call the number of the back of the unit.
  • FalconFour's Avatar
There is no number on the back of the unit. There's a model sticker with model number, compliance logos, etc., and a serial number sticker.

I also didn't ask for "illegal downloads". I said I don't want someone jumping on my reply and saying "that's illeeeaaaagal" - much like you just did. I implied that I'm willing to pay a small amount for them, but nowheres near the absurd cost of a fully re-licensed set of maps when my device was already licensed with maps to begin with.

I'd just like to know, both if USA maps are available (most importantly) for this Satnav 200, and who I need to contact to get them. I think a 1-2gb SD card would be easy enough to come by ;)

edit: Of course, if it didn't originally come with USA maps, and it's USA maps that I want, then of course I'd pay to license those. I'm just quite familiar with Windows software licensing on PCs, and nobody ever buys a full new copy of Windows just because they need to reformat their PC ;)
