Default A question for the knowledgable possibly from the fuel industry

If diesel is left unused for a period of time, does the cetane value become reduced ?

(I have posted this in technical also)

A good question and which seems to have 2 answers - yes and no depending on who you believe!

I put 'does cetane degrade' into Google and its the usual hit and miss replies. However all agree that even if it does, and that after 12 years in one case, there was still sufficient in the fuel to start the engine.
Interesting part was that a lower cetane rating than advised by the manufacturer causes poor running and difficult starting and this seems to be quite a common problem. Perhaps the pumps are being filled with the wrong grade rather than contaminated fuel which most garages will tell you?
