Ford Ka rear light issue!!!!!!!!

  • Bridgetdwarf's Avatar
My indicator started to go double time in my KA and discovered this meant I had a blown bulb.

front indicator bulb succesfuly changed and all ok.

Then rear drivers side brake light went and again bulb changed and all ok.

    until this week!

Now right indicator works ok, UNTIL I PUT MY FOOT ONTHE BRAKE WHILST INDICATING RIGHT.

The indicator noise slows down but apparently a disco happens on the rear light panel!!!!!!

If I am indicating left and brkae, the rear indicator stays lit and acts as the brake light!!

Both brake lights and indicators work fine as long as I don't brake!

    HHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP!:)

You have a bad earth on the right hand rear cluster.

    Earth

Sorry to be dim and ask stupid question, but where would I find this dodgy earth and how do I fix it????

On a car, the "earth" is the return path for the current to flow to complete a circuit and so that only one wire is needed one side of the battery is connected to the "frame" (formerly known as the "chassis" - which usually doesn't exist anymore - certainly not on a Ka!).

Things such as light "clusters" will have one connection to the frame for this "earth" return path (nowadays almost always the negative terminal). Often this will be one black wire connected to the frame somewhere near the cluster, usually by a bolt (and usually uninsulated because the "earth" side doesn't need it).

You need to find it, clean it up with a wire brush or emery paper, coat it in vaseline (NOT grease) and make sure it is tight. Problem is you can't be sure which side it is on, and some vehicle have, say, only one earth for the whole of the rear lighting - a workshop manual might help!
