Paper requirements for quad in Europe

Any one with experience of travelling within the EU towing a trailer with a quad on board. This is an unregistered quad, recently bought with no papers. Chassis number is clearly stamped on the frame. We can contact the seller if need be to find out where he originally bought it from as he had owned from new. Question is are papers required for this quad when travelling across europe.

I would take any paperwork you can get just for the peace of mind. I had an experience with Sussex Police with an unregistered trike on a trailer and no paperwork. Involved quite a delay whilst it was sorted out. Luckily it was during the day and all involved were still at work. Hate to think how long it would have taken in night hours.

What was the problem with towing a trailer with a trike on it?
After all, if the trike is only used for off road, and never goes onto the streets, as it were, where is the harm

I used to tow a large load-lugger for two years, and never had any problems at all. No one ever stopped me to ask what was inside, if you know what I mean.;)
