Need fan belt advice

    Hi,

I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to cars therefore I would be very grateful for any advice!

After attempting to start my car after a long period of the car being idle (about a month), the car would not start, anyway I tried to jump start the car which was successful but lead to a lot of smoke being produced from the fan or alternator belt (I’m not quite sure what it's called). It was also clear that the belt seemed to be melting/burning and there was a squealing/screeching type noise being produced.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem or if anyone could advice me on what to do? Is this a big job? Is the belt easy to change manually or should it be done professionally? Also what sort of costs would this incur?

    Thanks for your time.

    Adrian.

    Screeching Fanbelt

This was the very first problem I had 37 years ago. Buy a workshop manual and a set of good quality spanners or tool kit and a new belt. It is a simple job for the beginner. Wecome to the world of DIY motoring. The more you do the more you learn. Sometimes the hard way. Don't try anything you are not sure about. Manuals can be easily sourced.(Halfords for one)
