Peugeot 207 Oil

  • Ronnie1234's Avatar
I had my Mot about two weeks which passed, in the advisory items though it listed an oil leak.

Today & Friday when I pulled in the works car park a warning message came up saying Low Oil Pressure in Engine (or something like that). It has only happened so fa when I pull in the car park - you have to turn round almost immediately as you pull in there.

    Could the two be related?

When did you last check the oil level? If you have an oil leak the chances are that the oil level is low.

207 petrol engines are prone to the head gasket leaking oil from the front driver's side corner even in low mileage cars. If your car is just out of warranty then Peugeot may pay a part of the bill but you will have to shout to get this from them. As this is under pressure, doesn't take long to empty the sump. You must fill it immediately to prevent serious demage.

Oil level would have been checked last December when had last service (Iknow should be done more often)

It is an 06 so quite far out of warranty now.

It didn;t happen this morning when I pulled in car park it only seems to be when I have to turn sharply into the car park. When I start car it says oil ok

That kind of attitude to looking after your car will bite you very hard on the backside sooner or later.

I've no doubt that one day you will be posting "my engine seized - what can I do"

    Hello Ronnie1234,
I think you need to work up a system of doing maintenance checks on your car; otherwise, you are going to destroy it.
As a guide, I aim to check oil, tyre pressure, cooling water and windscreen washers once per week (say Sunday AM).

    Hi Ronnie...

The first thing you need to do is with the car on level ground is to check you oil level on the dipstick, ignore what the dash says and check yourself it is the best way, if it is below max then top up!!

It could be just low oil and loosing pressure under sharp cornering due to low oil level..

I know there was an issue with oil filters breaking on these models from new but as it has been serviced this should be ok..

Word of warning, if the light is coming on then stop driving and get it checked out...

Think the oil leak as found on the MOT needs to be sorted???

Just got back from the main dealer. My 2008 207 1.4 8V has oil leaking from the head at the drivers side. Car has done 13000 miles. Dealer very helpful and has booked it in to have the job done under the warranty. Can't speak too highly of them and have dealt with them for the last 17 years - Howards of Taunton if anyone is interested.

With reference to the items above - if you overfill the sump with oil the first place you should see the excess oil coming out is around the crankshaft oil seals. It is very unlikely that it will leak out of the head gasket just because you have overfilled the sump. The simple rule is to check your oil weekly and keep it between the two marks on the dipstick - it is not difficult.

In one respect you were lucky that it failed within the warranty period. Unfortunately, the originator of this post has not bothered to come back and tell us the result which may help others. As for not checking the oil level.....

Once it is resolved I will post the outcome. Fortunately there is still 8 months on the warranty so any sign of other defects and it will be gone. Maybe trade it in on a piece of german technology. I have had three Pugs since I owned a 306 diesel turbo - none of them have been a patch on the 306 - a brilliant motor. 120000 miles apart from servicing 1 exhaust, 1 radiator and a thermostat.

Yes, agree with you there. The 207 really does have a head gasket weakness which is very surprising. If you go for a BMW 1 series ensure it has had the correct oil in it. If it has had ordinary 10/40 and not been serviced you must walk away as the engine will be ruined.

Kept checking the oil levels and it was fine.

Car had service today though and garage said that the head gasket has been leaking oil and it will need be to replaced very soon. Also the timing belt will need replacing (I thought this might be the case as it's done approx 68,000 miles)

If your is the 1.4 8 valve engine you might have the same problem as myself. When I collect the car I will update this post - I will ask how much it would have cost if the warranty had expired & if this is a common problem. Watch this space.

It is 1.4, but it's 16v. Your having your head gasket replaced then? Thank you
  • Sootblower69's Avatar
Yes - head gasket being replaced next week. They are having the car for three days. Head gaskets in general have become more reliable as the years have gone by so don't understand why Peugeot appear to have a problem. The 1.9 Pug diesels used to suffer from head gasket failure, but this was usually down to a lack of coolant and hence overheating. Maybe poor quality gaskets or poor installation on the 207. Will let you know what they tell me when I collect next week.

Thank you. Garage have told me today, it might not be as bad as first anticipated, might not be complete replacement of head gasket

Ronnie, a partial head gasket replacement is a new one on me for a car. Can't say in 30 years of engineering I have come across a partial head gasket! Many large engines have a separtate head for every cylinder but as a general rule car engines have one head, maybe they mean another gasket when the oil system connects to the head.

Usually there is a ferrule (small pipe) on the mating face between the block and the head, which is the passage for pressurised oil to pass to the top part of the engine. This is generally at the same end on the block as the oil pump. The seal for this ferrule is usually made by the head gasket, although larger engines may have a separate seal or an external pipe fitted. Once the oil has done its work it will drain back into the sump under garvity via passages in the block.

Just got back from picking up the car. Job done under warranty by main dealer, no problems. Would have cost around £700, 7 hours labour plus parts. Told that this is not a common problem on the 207 and Peugeot asked for photographs. They also sorted a minor defect on the car with the hatchback. Once again tip top service by professionals.

207 has just been in for the second time for the head gasket to be replaced. Although the warranty was finished (14 months ago) I tried my luck. Peugeot did it again at no cost but stated there would be no warranty with this repair and any further repairs would be at the full cost. Cannot fault the service from the main dealer but surely Peugeot should have a permanent fix for this? Trawling the internet it would seem that this is a common problem - so its time to kiss this car goodbye. From my recent experiences with a 307, 308 and now this 207 I will not be buying Peugeot again. They dont seem to be able to produce anything as well engineered as the 306 turbo diesel.....
