RAC Satnav support - including Updated Maps / Safety Camera Updates

    Ripped off

Yes you haven't missed the point at all, you along with 100s or 1,000s of others have been misled into thinking you would get free maps.

So if you waited all this time like me since 2006 you are now going to be charged £30 plus another £4 p&p, what you'll get for all that is a SD Card with Maps up to the end of 2008 on.

You can read the rest of my replies for suggestions, but like us I guess you feel sick to the stomach now.

And like Bin lid says nothing from RAC or Nutool customer service.

What a total crock of ****! surely writing this on the box would have sent everyone who's buying 1 running for miles!i would have, now im stuck with a ****** satnav with out of date maps and not a pot to **** in!
Has all the models from rac been like this?
  • binlid's Avatar
And still the team keeps silent! Still no offer to buy my 220. (The car charger is 'playing up' on it now! I dread to think what they would charge for a replacement)
  • binlid's Avatar
    Bargain?

Check out a well known internet auction site, item number 320362442057, a brand new rac 200 in its box. Bids starting at £40, buy it now approx £60. P+P £6. Now is that a bargain or what!
  • testmanager's Avatar
    Bargin

Only a bargin if you get up to date maps Binlid, why do you think he is sell it and no offers have come in for yours.

To answer Scottish lobo yes all models are the same worthless. But if you still have the original packaging there was a watertight padded bag - instead of a pot, sorry that was a joke but not as big as the RAC satnavs are!

I am wondering if the same map updates will work in all our models, if so only one person needs to buy and then pass it round, having made a copy first.

I bought Microsoft's Autroroute 2005 some years ago. Can't remember how much it cost, but it was not cheap. During this time, there has never been any free updates or upgrades. Last year I looked at replacing it. The cheapest I could get the later version was £84. I added the extra £5 and bought RAC 200 satnav. I don't see how you can seriously expect free upgrades for a satnav. No paper mapping system gives them, and I cannot find a single PC program that does. One poster stated they will revert to map reading, but I do not know of a single paper mapping system that is any more accurate than the update on offer. (Some are a lot worse in my experience.)
  • binlid's Avatar
Dear Rolebama, I do not expect any update for maps for free, work has to go into getting the data for the new mapping. (Except where the camera safety partnerships provide their enforcement site locations free of charge). I expect camera updates for free. What does annoy me is the charge for p+p for this new mapping. We are only talking of a couple of quid I know, the cost of the sd card has plummetted to pence so the producers/sellers are quids in there. It is the principle, anything to make a quick buck. I am annoyed that 'The Team' remains silent and they are not prepared to show the trust in their product by offering to buy back this top of the range item from me even as a trade in. It speaks loads.
Without the new maps, the units are next to worthless and will become more worthless as time goes on and new streets/roads are added to the UK road network. It is a case of buy an upgrade or buy a new satnav, there is not much incentive to buy the upgraded maps when there is customer support like this. It annoys me it has taken so long to get to this stage and so many comments made on this thread

I know i've only just joined, and many of you have been here for ages but i having looked at some of the recent posts i have to say i am shocked at the imaturity of some people here.

    1. "I expected free updates on my maps"
I have never known ANY portable sat nave producer to offer free map updates

    2. "they should buy back my sat nav cos it sucks"
if you were that dissapointed you should have taken it back to the place you bought it within the refund period as it obviously doesnt suit your needs (as it isnt a perfect unit which automatically updates itself overnight so you never have any worries at all)

I have owned the RAC 200 since it's UK launch, and never had a moments hastle with it, except for new roads being produced. Compare this with competition at the same price bracket (80-150) and it is definately a better product. For example. driving down a particular road in kent the TOMTOM 1 with 2 month old map updates tried to get me to go down a cycle path, whereas the RAC gave me a perfect route home.

Also, £29.99 + P&P is still good value, if you compare this to others (like, hmmm lets say TOMTOM as that seems to be the current favourite?) who charge £39.95 for just the UK and Northern Ireland map, where you would also have to buy an SD card to put it on.

If you guys asked instore for advice on what to buy, you should be complaining to them, not the admin staff here as you were obviously not in the know as far as this technology is concerned.

    RAC 215 Sat Nav

I bought one of these sat navs, now I have lost all the POI's, I have tried to reload them from the CD with no success, it keeps telling me ther is a problem.
Can anyone ]please tell me how I can rectify this.

    Geordie
  • smudger's Avatar
Hi Geordie, Welcome to the site, you don't set your POI from the CD disc, you set them yourself from the list that is in your unit. Well, at least that was how I set mine. Have a read through the book again, good luck;)
    Cheers, Smudger.
  • Geordie809's Avatar
Thanks Smudger, but there are no POI's in my unit (only speed ones), I think I have deleated them, now I need to replace them somehow.
  • smudger's Avatar
Well it could be the same problem as my one, where the program needs to be replaced onto your SD card. The folk at the call centre will be able to talk you through it, but make sure your PC and sat-nav are both on, before you call them, good luck;)
    Cheers, Smudger.
  • RAC_SATNAV_TEAM's Avatar
Hmmm so that means they are charging £4 to post an sd card. Must be a special envelope and delivery service.
Oh guess I have forgot they may be adding the handling charge and the surcharge for using whatever method of payment you decide upon. It can't be £4 for a jiffy bag and postage, surely?

The exact total is £32.22 which makes the P&P £2.23

Now, for a protective jiffy bag and 1st class recorded delivery, I really do not believe that is unreasonable.
  • RAC_SATNAV_TEAM's Avatar
Keep posting the "team" might wake up

Is there something specific you would like to ask me?

I'm sorry but I am unable to participate in an online argument about pricing. I can deliver facts and also try to answer specific queries but that is where my input ends I'm afraid.
  • Geordie809's Avatar
Thanks Smudge, I contacted RAC and have just posted my SD card off to them.
    Cheers Mate
  • Rolebama's Avatar
Something to bear in mind is that if you put too many on, the unit fails to recognize any of them. I managed to put 85 packs on my card, before I discovered this.:):)

Question: Won't take me on Motorways

Hi, I bought an RAC Satnav off ebay and it is great in all areas except that it won't route me onto any motorway even though I have un-ticked the Avoid Motorways box? Have even tried to tick it but it still won't do it. It actually takes me through town centres which is an absolute nightmare. Can anybody help me? Regards James
  • Rolebama's Avatar
When you set up a journey, it should ask whether you want the quickest or shortest route. That will make a difference, as will setting your maximum speeds on road types. Eg, if you set max motorway speed to 40mph and A road to 60mph and ask for quickest route, it would probably avoid motorways. Worth checking as people do muck about with satnavs.
  • smudger's Avatar
Yea! that's true, as I set mine for the "quickest" way home from Leith that day, and it took me all around back country roads! I thought it was not working, but it got me home a good 20 minutes faster then it did when I went there;)

    200E Map Q3 2008 Updates

    Hi,
Does anyone know when Q3 2008 updates are available for Europe - Model 200??

    Dean

  • binlid's Avatar
Dear RAC Satnav team. Three weeks ago it is stated on this thread that a user of the forum rang up and was quoted £33, sadly no response to that posting by the team until almost 2 weeks later. (I was trying to hold on for a few more weeks before responding to your last post, but I do not have the same resolve as you.) Perhaps a quicker response to posting number 294 would not have resulted in my comments? Your original posting stated £29.99 plus p+p for the UK maps, or am I wrong? Why not come straight out with all the facts rather than half a story, i.e £29.99 plus £2.23 for recorded delivery, it would stop any guess work by those who have been reading this thread for so long! Much like telling users the real dates of when updates would actually be available in the first place, rather than 'in two weeks time'.
Now do you think my comments are so unreasonable?
Oh, would you like to buy a 220 unit, now you have released the latest updated maps?
  • clkgtrlm1's Avatar
Phoned up the Customer Service helpline yesterday to enquire about Q3 Mapping for Europe for my 200 unit. Advised politely that it was now available, payed my £51 (Don't mind paying £3 for P+P - does exactly what it says on the tin). Should be with me in 2 - 3 days.

    Excellent

    Completely agree Snyper.
Some of these post are rediculous.

BINLID - Do you REALLY expect exceptional customer service when you are so obnoxious? To be honest I suggest that these people have lost patience with you. If you are SO ANNOYED, why do you not sell the unit on flea bay, buy a Tom Tom and c*ck off over onto their website.

Whinging about £3 p and p charge - that surely only marginally covers logistics admin and delivery charges!

    Some people................

Anyway , thanks for all the help guys

Good news clkgtrlm1, glad you got such a good result. I have found that them folk at the help centre really helpful, that's why I always recommend posters to call them, when they post for help on here;)

Dear clkgtrlml, Whooooooo, (holds up handbag, shakes it and blows a kiss), I am so glad you have got your new maps as you will now be able to tour Europe and no longer have a need to add any contributions to the thread. You may be willing to accept poor service, I do not. Just take a read through the posts on this thread, it starts back at number 76 where users are given dates of new map updates and goes right through. May I refer you to posts 138,190,192,195, 254 and 259 re service? I was very happy with my unit and I said that when I finally managed to be able to subscribe to this thread in Oct 08, it is the back up that has been very poor with the various comments that have been made by staff since I have been trying to get the new maps. (Now I find my supply lead has failed). I would put it up for sale on a well known auction site, but it does not do much when the company that promotes it would not say publically that they would buy it back as a trade in against a new unit, (think.... now would I actually sell it or trade it in?) Believe it or not, I do not enjoy complaining. All I want is an honest and fair service and reading some of these posts, I am sure others did at the time they were posted. Perhaps some of those such as Gerry have actually moved on to Tom Tom or another brand, who knows? Hope you enjoy your travels around Europe and get lost. Oh sorry, that should read don't get lost!
  • clkgtrlm1's Avatar
    Cheers Binlid.

Thanks once again for your intelligent input.

I can assure you that as an MCIPs qualified professional, I do take your point about poor service not being acceptable. To be honest I have not had that experience, in fact the opposite.
Thus really cannot be bothered to read all the rest of your posts, suspect they are much of the same anyway.

I will certainly enjoy my European vacations, and relax, not worrying about trivial things. A beer will be toated to you whilst sat in the sun at La Sarthe!

I really hope you resolve your issues soon.

    And Finally

    Dear clkgtrlm1 et al

I'm happy you have a nice number of letters after your name, if i were to put mind down here i'd run out of space to reply to you newbies

For those of you who have just joined this thread and i respectfully ask you to go and search the others on this site, the point here as correctly identified by Binlin amongst others is poor customer service.
Now you can all ring up those nice folks on the helpline and when they answer they are very polite and say nice words, but I’m afraid that’s all they are.

Take a moment to reflect on the situation here, buying an RAC Sat Nav in Summer 2006, how soon do you think it would be before the maps were old an not longer valid 3 months - 6 months - a year i hear you cry! Lets now talk about the "new maps" or more rightly called the "FIRST New Maps in 3 years"

I wonder how many calls to customer service you would have made in that time?
How many “oh yes we are getting the new maps soon, they are just being tested†you would have excepted?

A reliable product some one said - i have had 5 new SD card and 6 times returned the unit to NUTOOL. It still fine to come on and i have to admit the free safety camera updates are great, but try to navigate anywhere - 5 minutes of the egg timer and then it throws an error message.

So guys lets not mock the guys who have stuck with there RAC sally Sat Navs for years, just because you are getting the service we should have been getting for the past 3 years or more.
I hope your units all work fine and you enjoy many miles of happy motoring. Perhaps now RAC have got their act together regular updates will become the norm - watch this space

We are all entitled to our own opinions, which is a good thing in itself. Yet I wonder how many other sat-nav companies offer any kind of after sales service at all?

I for one, do appreciate the fact that they are there to help, and listen to any complaints that we have, but most of all, do their best to resolve them;)
    Cheers, Smudger.
  • Rolebama's Avatar
I have two complaints about my 200 SatNav. One hardware, one software.
As to the hardware, the rubber button covering the on/off switch disappeared within a month of buying it. I phoned them and was only offered on the phone: 'If you send it to us, we will have a look at it'. So for the last months I have been using my Ford Chubb-style key down the hole to turn it on and off. Unfortunately, I now have a Peugeot and the key don't fit!
The software problem I have is that it is Windows-based. What is it with this blind following of Gates Millions? Linux would have been a far better choice. A dedicated program could have been written.
    Whinge-mode deactivated. Happy-mode activated.
I believe mine has paid for itself now, if not in terms of the cash I paid for it, at least in saved fuel, time and grief when I have turned off the motorways at the junction before the tailback, and used it to make cross-country detours.
  • clkgtrlm1's Avatar
testmanager - you can make up all the letters you need.
I have been watching this forum for many a long year.

    Agreed Smudge
Surely updates once every 3 years are enough anyway - roads don't change that much!!!!!!
Satnav is only a tool to help you to your destination, not a driving aid. If you have no common sense anyway, then a satnav is not going to assist you that much.

    - I will leave it there.

I don't need to make up letters or feel the need to brandish them, or lie!

You have been watch for year have you?
Now everyone look at the date you joined - oh dear.

Guys I am not getting in to your meaning less arguments, if you are happy with updates every 3 years fine, if you are happy with this level of customer service also fine - the vast majority on here are not!

Would it still pay for itself if a speed camera were on a road not updated? or would £60 fine make you think again.

    good luck to all
