Hey all,


Me and my best chum were down on the beach last night in his off-roader driving up and along the sand.Great fun! But we didn't no, and I have been unable to find, if its legal/illegal to drive on the beach? There's a slip road that leads down onto the sand where people drive their vehicles to and from to unload their fishing boats/jet ski's off their trailers.

...Just for the record, it was 2 in the morning, in pitch darkness, and the tide was out so i cannot see any such risk involved? (unless we we're to get stuck!) :rolleyes:

I have generally found that where you are allowed to drive on the beach, the local Councils usually charge for access. A lot of beaches are being closed to traffic though since an invasion of young kids on those tiny motorbikes making a racket and being involved in collisions with pedestrians. They also usually have speed limits.

Driving a motor vehicle on the foreshore without the permission of the local authority is forbidden almost everywhere in the uK - it's the same as driving off road anywhere - apart from the obvious aditional hazards!

This is what I also understand to be the law.

I wonder if Top Gear had permission when they spent a whole day driving them 3 cars on that Beach in somewhere in Wales?

Back in the 60s we used to race our motor bikes along the coast from Findhorn to Hopeman, when the tide was out, and no one bothered about it, mind you, life was a lot better all round back then;)

I don't know, but when Top Gear went out to play silly beggers, they were on Pendyne Sands which has been used for years - in fact, in "the old days" (e.g. Malcolm Campbell) world speed record attempts were made there!

Must admit that when I read the original post, Criccieth Beach in North Wales came to mind.

Does anyone know any beaches where you can get a licence or whatever from the local council? Thanks.

I only know that at Criccieth Beach, you just turn up and pay the man in the kiosk for access. I would suggest Googling Boroughs and sending emails for those you'd like to use.
