Can you help me please with an ongoing problem? just after a Christmas trip to see family in London we developed a fault with our camper van that meant we couldn't turn it off and very occasionally not turn it back on again, we took it to our local garage and left it with them for a fortnight and it only did it to them once so they changed the ignition barrel i was happy with their repairs in the past so accepted their diagnosis.
I May this year we drove from Cornwall to London, Sheffield and on to the lakes completing more than 1600 miles without a hick up so were well happy, until that is a short weekend trip to Dorset when the same problem started all over again.
we are due to go away again at the end of next week and hope to try and resolve the problem before we go. the only way i can turn it off is to stall it!

On the top of the high pressure pump on the engine is the fuel shut off valve. It is a solenoid, so that when you switch the ignition on, pulls a plunger out of the fuel pipe and lets fuel go to the engine. When you switch off, a spring forces it shut so cutting off the fuel supply. This is likely to be the faulty part. In an emergency the breakdown people used to remove this unit, take out the spring and plunger and this would always allow the car to start. But the down side is you have to stall the engine to stop it.

Thanks for your speedy reply, I have been told that my 2.8 JTD is a common rail engine and that it dosn't have a stop solenoid? do you agree with them?

When I looked up your question I checked Autodata first but your engine is not shown in detail. So I looked on my Bosch diagnostic tool and there was a clear picture of the stop solenoid with a description. Your engine has a common rail injection system made by Bosch. If its wrong then Bosch have made the mistake!
