Ford Escort 1.8TD rough warm idle
-
My Ford Escort 1.8TD 1993 has become a bit difficult to start and the idle when warm is rough - it sounds like it randomly opens/closes the EGR valve. Any ideas on this please?

The starting problem may/may not be separate from the rough running.
Have you checked the glow plugs and the feed to them?
To eliminate the EGR valve, just disconnect and blank off the vacuum pipes. This fault can also be caused by the EGR regulator on the pump.
Is the waxstat cold start working properly? You should see the lever on the pump move back as the engine warms up.
Check for air leaks at all fuel pipes and round the filter/housing.
Remove the black plastic fuel pipe between the filter outlet and pump inlet. If you suck from the pump end it should be perfectly clear. If not and is partially restricted, the non-return valve in the centre of it is failing. This pipe costs about £18 from Ford.
Then its checking valve and pump timing and finally the injectors. -
one thing that gets overlooked on these is valve clearances which makew it more difficult to start, sometimes when just starting to warm up and when they get hot they idle all lumpy. With age and mileage the valve clearances close up! always worth a check

Solution to poor starting and rough idle
I took my car to a diesel specialist and they noticed there was a small fuel leak from the idle lever on the injector pump - meaning air would be getting into the fuel. They took the top of the injector pump off and replaced the o ring seals on this lever. Also adjusted idle to about 1000rpm.
This has greatly improved the starting and the lumpy idle when warm has gone.
