tips for buying breakdown cover

This is a guide to how avoid getting ripped off when buying breakdown cover as explained to me by an employee today. I have paraphrased our conversation as we are not all experts like the guy i spoke to on the phone. I have been an orange van customer on a family membership for 9 years and on my own policy for 3 years.
Tip1 loyalty means nothing! Companies will rob you blind especially if they think they have won your trust, this just makes it easier for them. I consider a 110% overcharge to be a rip off just in case you were wondering my definition.
Tip2. Dont think that going direct is cheapest. You can pay less than half the online prices and get more for less by buying from an affiliate such as a major supermaket or a bank. Why let these companies make massive profits for no extra service.
Tip3. Dont believe when these companies say they have compared their price and it is fair. This is a conspiracy within the industry to allow them to exploit those who are trusting. The truth is that all the 3 major companies advertise high online prices that are 'comparable' however they do not compare their online price with any that are lower! For example their own cover bought through an afilliate supermarket. In short when you get ypur renewal letter through dont believe it when i says its been 'compared' it may have been but unfairly.
My wife pays 63 pounds through an afiliate supermarket for more cover with a 3 letter company than i get by buying direct at 101 pounds and that includes a 'no claims' loyalty discount. What a total rip off if it can be sold for 63 pounds it means that they are overcharging existing customers massively. I advise buying only from companies with 2 letter names because there seems to be a direct link between the length of the name and how much they will try to rip you off.
Tip4. There in no sympathy for those who have been ripped off and no refunds beyonf 14 days, even for automatic renewals that may have not been sanctioned. If you are stupid enough to get conned then they will not care even when they are caught redhanded. They wont give 2 hoots about how disapointed you are pr how you have clearly been tricked, so beware.

I think this is where alot of people go wrong, Often they are mislead and are only covered for roadside assistance. They only find out when they breakdown and need recovery.

I would most definitely agree with shopping around for this, as I found one company which gave me a discount of 35% for being a Veteran. My renewal came through with the same discount. Unfortunately, it was not with the company I worked for all those years.

Well I signed up here to start a thread on just this subject but I may as well post here instead.

I received my renewal today from a three letter motorist association, been with them eleven years. Called them out a few times but not at all in the last four years.

Renewal quote is £190 for two of us, Roadside/Recovery/Home Start. I went online to their website for a quote as a new customer, £108. I called their customer service department and asked what they were doing, was offered a renewal of around £140! Just how stupid do they think we are?

A two-letter competitor quoted £134 online so I can either go with them or allow my current membership to lapse then join again as a new member for £108. Actually I think I'll pay £134 on principal.

It is the same everywhere these days! No customer loyalty or a better price for those who pay and don't use the service. The competition will do it for £134 for the first year and then they will increase it the following year, With the same old spill of it being a special offer for new customers only.

I'd like it to be run on a no claims discount system, Where people who don't call them in a year get it for the same price as they did the year before.

Yea! that sounds like a good idea really, but I don't think it would happen, as that would mean them making less profit?

(Anyone know about that new one.....Green Flag?)

New? They have been around for years.

The problem is that these days all companies work on the basis of keeping the shareholders happy.

Aye! but I meant as in New, not got the traditions of the others.
We will lose our free RAC cover in Sept. when we give that car back, but due to the amount of distance and mileage we do, it wouldn't be worth it financially for us to buy any cover?
