What type of speed cameras do they have on the M1 in the area of Milton Keynes?

Are there any which appear to flash with a blue light?

Do they still have Average Speed cameras in that area?

Snowball is probably right, blue lights on a lorry. I don't believe it's illegal.

AFAIK there are no speed cameras with a blue flash.

I am not sure what you mean "get away with it"?

You can festoon your car with lights if you want, provided that they are properly secured and they all work - remember the Mods with their Lambrettas?

That said - I think that drivers who do this have more money than sense.

Within the painted marks on the road, but a hand held one can "ping" any vehicles further, as long as there is nothing between the laser and the target.

I have often wondered about this. In a continuous road with several average speed cameras, do they detect a speeding vehicle by its registration plate and automatically "tot up the average speed across a range of cameras, or do they simply detect excess speed on one camera then check it at the next camera and send a NIP/FPN (or whatever) if the average speed is above the accepted limit?

I don't understand your confusion. These cameras detect your number plate, time you to the next camera, then use the time and distance to calculate your average speed between the two cameras. The idea is to stop the 'speedup - slow down' idiots who only slow down for the cameras.

SPECS speed cameras are located in multiple (at least 2 at a minimum of 200 metres apart) locations along a single stretch of road for monitoring your average speed along that particular road. So unlike other speed cameras which capture your speed at a certain point in the road, SPECS average speed camera work and track you speed over a set distance, which may be serveral miles!

Some of these Average speed camera installations have a string of 12 or more cameras over a long distance. The Horseshoe Pass for example. No. I think I meant to say the A537 The Cat and Fiddle Road. Correction

Apparently it is a secret whether is it the average speed from the first one to the last one, or is it a series of averages between each successive pair.

As far as I can tell - the cameras Dennis refers to are not average speed SPECS, but standard GATSOs.

Now for the confusing bit:
(a) 'at least 2' is obvious to get and average speed. Surely a clear explanation should be "between any two cameras".
(b) 'at least 200 metres apart...........'over a set distance that may be several miles'. This could lead to someone believing that, if there were, say, 8 cameras over the distance of several miles, then the average speed was calculated from the first to the last camera passed.
My take on this is that, if one was speeding across the whole range of 8 cameras, then that driver would incur seven separate offences.
Am I right?

My second post makes the point that the way multiple cameras work is a secret.

I have seen from posts elsewhere that in the circumstances you describe, the driver would only get one ticket. I would not bet on it though. Of course, if they were all GATSOs, he would get a ticket from each one.

Are the Average speed cameras able to capture Motor cycle registration plates?

Because one of the main reasons for having Average speed cameras on the Cat and Fiddle road is because some motor cyclists love the bends and the gradient

The SPECS cameras can be used either forward- or rear-facing, so motorcycles needn't be a problem.

Dennis, why do you want to know? If you are travelling within the speed limit, there's no issue on m-ways. To my mind, average speed cameras on m-ways/dual carriageways are actually more sensible (assuming it's normally free flowing traffic) as it allows you to speed up a bit on uphill sections to overtake lorries but still balance your overall speed. Way, way better than those that belt along and slam their brakes on for known always active cameras.

I live in Wales. and we do not have Average speed cameras locally. But when I travel in England I encounter these Average Speed Camera stretches of road, particularly where there are roadworks with a 50 mph limit.

A secret? If challenged in court, could not the defence demand an explanation of how they work in order to prove that justice was being done? What about the Freedom of Information Act?

Yes, You are correct Snowball. The defence could request details from the computer prints of the locations and speeds calculated.
