Hi guys i have a problem and your input would be greatly appreciated

The car is a BMW 325i Convertible
L reg E36

Basically i tried to start the car and there was a loud pop from under the bonnet folloewd by a small amount of smoke. Now the car isnt as should e and when it starts it will rev irractically between 500-1500 Revs. Under the bonnet there is a small amount of smoke coming form the air filter area and i have no idea what is wrong with it??

It will not rev properly and i dont want to keep starting it until i know what it may be or what to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated

hi, have you had any work done to the engine, have you checked the timing, check that you've got a spark at all the plug's, check dizzy cap for cracks, has it got a cam belt rather than a cam chain, it may have jumped a cog if the tensioner is weak,

Sounds like a timing issue, also check for any intake hoeses leaking and drawing air in weakening the mixture.

Ive done no modification but i just took the air filter out and its knackered and scorched so i am going to change that in the morning as it now revs to the top end and sounds fine although it is still idleing irratically

when you say erratically, do you mean the idle speed goes up and down, or its rough, not running on all cylinders

no it was just up and down quickly between 500-1500

Think its sussed now though my mate is a ferrari mechanic and he just popped round and sorted it the sensor had blown off but now there is a large hissing sound as if air is leaking from some where so hes going to look at it on his ramp tomorrow, keep you posted once again thanks guys

im not a BMW expert, but it sounds like the "idle control valve", not sure if BMW call it that, or where it is on your engine, you might be able to find out what it looks like on ebay, it might take several searches, using "BMW 325 idle control valve" as a starting point, i might take a look myself in mo,

found one, but i dont think its the one for yours, but its the general idea
