AUTOMATIC gear boxes

Why are car manufacturers allowed to call a DCT box automatic , when it is not fully auto, to say that it is legal to call a box automatic if there is no clutch pedal makes the law an ***. With a rotten DCT box you have to change manually at low speed, therefore the box must be called semi-auto.

What about the driving licence category which only permits some drivers to drive with automatic transmissions?

After a little research I came across this on Piston Heads: "If the box is capable of changing ratios by itself then it is an automatic, if not it is a manual." The key word is capable.
That seems to sum up the situation nicely.
To call the law an *** is disingenuous. There is no intermediate between manual and auto, so it has been accepted that DCT = auto. That you dislike it doesn't make it wrong.
