inhibitor replacement on auto clio

  • kjsch's Avatar
hi i have a 1999 clio 1.6 auto it thinks its still in neutral and wont start, i towed it home with the lever in the park position and it towed fine as in neutral. when i put the ignition on i can here a nose from the top of the gearbox sort of like a click-ish noise but when i go to turn the engine over its dead even though i have dash lights and a new battery.i was told it may be the inhibitor switch on the gearbox, i can see the wires but cant get to it as the top of the gearbox near the lever is covered in rubber..is it this that is the problem and how do i get to it to take it out and replace it..:confused:

I would check out the selector mechanism. It there are problems with this, it may not be allowing the inhibitor switch to work properly. The comment about towing in Park leads me to believe the mechanism is in need of checking.
