I really hope that someone can help me :) I purchased a 2001 Y Reg Ford Fiesta which was well loked after and low mileage in 20008. It ran like a dream for the first year and a quarter. Then one day, I truend the AC on, and the Speedo, Fuel Gauge, Rev Counter swung from side to side, the clock re-set to 0, the resettable mile counter went to 0, the back wiper started wiping, the front wipers wouldn't work and then everything went back to normal. The petrol gauge has been uneliable since and will sometimes show as empty even if I am half full. When this happened another time, it affected my air-bag and the light is now on.
I have intermittantly has problems with electrics including all of the above, headlights cutting out, indicators not working, blower/AC not working, electric windows not working. Now today I have had a bag 'electrical fault day' where the speedo and rev counter have swung so far the opposite way that they are now stuck and they seem to want to carry on clockwise back to 0! I am so sad about it and this is what I have done so far.
1. I have taken my car to a main Ford dealer and they run electrical diagnostic tests. They found an error with the airbag and they also changed the battery, but as I drove away the problem re-occured. This cost £180
2. I then took my car to a specialist electrician who ran the same tests but could not find anything other than the airbag. The codes were then re-set.
3. I have just spent 3 hours with RAC and they thought it might be the earth wires as these seemed loose. He tightened them and he also disconnected the battery and the dashboard and then re-fitted them. The problems seem to be there as the dashboard was slightly flickering. Allt he fuses and obvious wiring were checked.
Where do I go from here? It is scary when your lights suddently turn off at night. The weird thing about it is that I can go for 2-3 months with no problems accept for the dodgy petrol gauge and error light for the airbag.
