  • martybear's Avatar
I have a renault scenic 1.6 on an 05 plate, i have a problem when it starts, it makes a loud noise (a bit like a diesel engine) but goes away as soon as it starts,it does this a lot but not all the time, it has had a new starting motor fitted but this has not solved the problem! any ideas what to do next? my daugther had a 1.6 megan that did the same thing but it got sold with the fault. HELP!

This could be a faulty camshaft actuator (often called a dephaser). It moves the camshaft timing the faster you go. It is operated by oil pressure that is allowed in when a solenoid opens. If you have a diagnostic scan done it may show the camsahft sensor as being faulty but usually its the actuator itself.
It sits between the camshafts at the timing belt end. You could try disconnecting the electrical plug and see if it improves. If it does then you know its failing.

Thank's for the info, i have done what you said today, and so far so good, going to leave it overnight with the plug out, then re-place the sensor, great advice thanks a lot.

The problem is not with the sensor/actuator, its actually with the dephaser pulley itself, which is attached to the inlet camshaft as part of the variable valve timing system. The pulley is worn out internally, causing a loud metallic grating noise on first start in the morning? You will need to have the pulley and the timing belt kit replaced to cure this noise, its also advisable to have the ecu reprogrammed as the latest software manages this component much more effectively now.

Now that Briatore in the F1 team and the technical director have left the team to prevent them being charged by the F.I.A. with cheating, it about sums up this company.
