Problem With USB for RAC 215E

  • snake_eyes's Avatar
Hi im not new to computers so i kinda know what im doing, but wen i plug my SATNAV (RAC sat nav 215E) into my PC (running XP) it installs but just keeps dropping , like the noise that the PC makes when it detects a USB cable happens then after about 10 - 15 secs the sound that the PC makes when a USB cable is disconnected and this keeps happeneing aslong as i have it plugged in VIA USB , ive tried it on another LAPTOP and using a SD card reader/writer but same thing happens, ive exchanged it for a Whole new unit and same problem , tried plugging it into a LAPTOP in curry's (using Vista) and it worked straight away. Could this be driver issues ???
    Someone please help
    much appreciated, Nav

    Hi snake_eyes,
Well if it worked on that other computer in the shop, it sounds like a problem with your own PC, either a driver problem or a USB point one?
You say that it worked on the Vista PC but not your own one with XP, that would mean that its more likely to be the driver on XP. Other than that, I have no idea, but the fact that it does work with Vista is good in a way, as you then know that it does work.
    Cheers, Smudger.

This is a driver issue on the 'problem' PC. We do recommend that you transfer data using a SD card reader/writer as most do not need drivers and if they do it comes with the reader in the box.

Data transfer direct to a sat nav can cause problems with removal of hard drive data.

its not a usb point issue , ive tried it in a different laptop and! on a sd card reader same problem , im guessing its drivers but i dnt kno where i can get these from. if you could please let me know. Nav

What are you actually trying to load onto the card? Your firewall could be 'dropping' the connection.
  • snake_eyes's Avatar
tryin to update the saftey camera locations on the Sat Nav ,
i am not using a firewall , and ive checked windows firewall is off, ive checked it on another PC runnin Windows XP , same problem, so not one but 3 completely different PC's have the problem with this running on XP.

Have you tried using diffrent USB port?

My USB port's sometimes rejects connections but its solved by using a diffrent port.
Also. are your anti virus/Firewall settings set to Block all incoming connections as this would reject the USB.

Edit; Only other thing i can remember help[ing mine was downloading the newest Windows Xp service pack (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389) But id advise you go to control panel and make a System wipe checkpoint or whatever its called So that if it goes wrong you can open computer in safe mode and reload your comp[uter to the settings its on currently So all that data is taken off, Although, Its form microsoft so it shouldnt go wrong...

    USB - PC connection

I have an RAC Satnav 210 and a computer running Windows XP and have EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM - The PC does not 'see' the satnav when its connected tvia the USB port.

Interestingly, I have an older 'Blue Media' satnav which was marketed by Evesham Micros and when I connect this to the PC everything works fine.

The only logical conclusion is that -

Its NOT an XP driver fault.
    Its NOT a computer fault.
    Its an RAC SATNAV FAULT!!!!

    CAN ANYBODY HELP?

It certainly look like that, have you tried it in another computers USB port? Failing that, it looks like a return job?
    Cheers, Smudger.

XP comes with USB 1 and 1.1 already working. You have to install a later Service Pack for USB 2.0 to work. Quite possible your older SatNav is USB 1 or 1.1 compatible. Some (not all) devices which require USB 2.0, will not run with USB 1 or 1.1, I would check your Device Manager and ensure you have USB 2.0 Root Hub installed and working OK.
As to the 'noise I always get when plugging/unplugging USB device', there shouldn't be any noise, I think that may bear investigation. (Power limitation maybe)
  • Mike Gray's Avatar
I disagree - you should definitely hear a noise when plugging in or unplugging a USB device on Windows - it signifies that Windows has recognised it.

I'd make sure you have Activesync http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...c/default.mspx installed if you're using XP as I believe these satnavs are windows mobile devices. It's quite possible that a PC that worked just fine 'out of the box' with another satnav might not work immediately with another as they're based on different hardware and indeed different operating systems - so, for example, Garmin devices need a Garmin provided device driver, but not activesync, any Window Mobile based devices need Activesync to upload speed camera updates etc...
  • Rolebama's Avatar
I accept that if you have Sound System activated, you will get whatever sound you have accredited, but the 'computer' shouldn't make a noise. If I have misread the post and caused any probs in my reply, I apologise.
  • RAC_SATNAV_TEAM's Avatar
Mike is correct in his summary. Even if you struggle once you have downloaded Activesync then the most you would need is a driver to recognise the device BUT...

...we recommend that you use a card reader/writer to transfer data directly to the card. This prevents any possible data loss problems that could be caused by using the sat nav as a vehicle. A card reader/writer hardly ever needs software to connect to any PC and if it does need software it will be supplied in the box on a CD.

I bought a fantastic multi card reader that I use for my sat nav, mobile phone and digital camera from PC World for a fiver, it's fantastic.

    I hope this helps.

"then the most you would need is a driver to recognise the device"

Where would I get this driver because there doesn't seem to be one on the disk which is supplied with the RAC 210?

    S.S.
  • Mike Gray's Avatar
Have you got ActiveSync, Shiny Surfer? I do suspect that this is the cause of your problems. My satnav that employs this doesn't need an additional driver as it's a Windows Mobile device.
  • Shiny Surfer's Avatar
    Active sync

Thanks Mike, Yes I do have active Sync. As I said in an earlier post my old Blue Media satnav works fine through the USB connection.

Also, I do have XP SP2 with (supposedly) USB 2.0 activation but despite all this the RAC 210 isn't 'seen' by the computer.

In the 'Device Manager' list the 210 registers under 'Other Devices' as a 'USB device' but without a driver installed.

I have looked everywhere on the system and on the supplied disk and on the 'Windows Update' website but I can't find a driver

I feel that a driver is needed, but I do not know where to get one.

I am running out of patience with the RAC210 !

If I can't resolve this problem soon it goes down the flusher !

    S.S.
  • Mike Gray's Avatar
OK, so when you say it's not seen, do you hear the customary USB device detected sound? Can you see it in device manager in control panel? If so, does it have an exclamation mark next to it? Can activesync see it?
  • Shiny Surfer's Avatar
Thanks for being so patient Mike. Here are the answers -

Do I hear the USB sound? - Yes.
Do I see it in the Device manager list? - Yes.
Does it have an exclamation mark? - Yes.
Can Active Sync see it? - No.
  • Mike Gray's Avatar
OK, that's interesting. So the exclamation mark means there's something wrong as far as Windows is concerned, which is why Activesync can't see it. What you want to do next is right click the device in device manager and look for an error message - post that here and maybe we can help further?
  • Shiny Surfer's Avatar
    Error message

The only error message that I can find is this one
    ________________
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
    _____________
When I try to reinstall the drivers, none are found.

Does your Device Manager show USB 2.0 Root Hub?
  • Shiny Surfer's Avatar
    USB Root Hub

    Hello Rolebama.

My device manager shows only USB Root Hub and not USB 2.0 Root Hub.

The good news is it shows it eight times !

    Cheers.
  • Rolebama's Avatar
You will need to get USB 2.0 Root Hub installed. It should be part of SP2, if not check out Microsoft website for other updates. This was the best I could find. (I don't run XP, so couldn't access all areas)
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;312370 Check out the Resolution area. Hope this helps.

I have XP Sevice Pack 2 installed.
The following list of driver versions, obtained from Microsoft's website today, agrees with the ones on my computer (Although this particular article is describing how to install the USB 2.0 drivers in SP1).
    _______________________

    MS say:-
    How to confirm driver versions
Make sure that you have the latest USB 2.0 drivers that are available in Windows XP Service Pack 1. You can do this by verifying your driver version in the following table:Date Version File name
    29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 or later versions Usbport.sys
    29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 or later versions Usbhub.sys
    29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 or later versions Hccoin.dll
    29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 or later versions Usbehci.sys

I have now tried the RAC 210 on three computers all running XP SP2 and it doesn't work on any of them.
I'll make one final appeal before I throw it in the skip -
Is there ANYBODY out there who has succeeded in getting the RAC 210 Satnav to connect to an XP SP2 driven computer?

Many thanks to everybody who has offered their help in this matter. It is much appreciated. However, I fear that it is a lost cause.

  • RAC_SATNAV_TEAM's Avatar
I will say this again - please use a card reader/writer to transfer data between your PC and RAC sat nav.

Try using this driver (STEP ONE ONLY) at www.roadcom.co.uk. Select the RC400 driver download and then follow step one.
  • Rolebama's Avatar
Shiny Surfer, Andrew is very adamant that you need a card reader/writer to connect your SD card to computer. However, as you have not got USB 2.0 installed, you will have to ensure that the reader/writer you use is compatible with USB 1 or 1.1 which you have working. I suggest you try using the Update option from your Help menu to see if you can get USB2.0 to install. Wait until we see Andrew's reply to following before proceeding.
Andrew, can you confirm that a USB 1 or 1.1 card reader/writer would be adequate? Thanx
  • Shiny Surfer's Avatar
    Success a last!!
    Thanks to Andrew.
I downloaded the driver from WWW.roadcom.co.uk as he suggested.
However, I had to get into device manager and right click on 'Windows CE USB devices' and upgrade the driver manually from the C\RC400Driver folder.
    And it worked!
Active sync appeared as if by magic with the RAC210 connected.
I was then able to download the free safety camera update from the 'Route 66' website and load it into the satnav - fantastic.
I don't wish to seem ungenerous, but wouldn't it have been a good idea to have included this driver on the disk supplied with the RAC210 satnav in the first place?

Its a bit like buying a motor car and finding that you have to send away for a steering wheel to make it turn corners!

Thank you once again one and all.
