    Charging the RAC330

    Hi there,

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I got an RAC300 from Xmas and was wondering if the in-car charger is the only way of charging the sat-nav, or whether it charged when connected to a PC.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Thanks in advance

Yes you can charge it using the PC usb cable supplied with you rac300

I've got a 220 which is slowly getting to the stage where it is a waste of time charging it, unless I want to go off roading! The maps are so out of date and there is little chance the supplier is going to provide anything to make it better except nice written words!

Dear jerrygrant, I 'moan' about the RAC220 satnav because I bought a product, branded RAC, boxed RAC and offered, (as a bonus), a discount off my next RAC membership renewal.
Yes I could lie down and submit by buying another product produced by one of the companies you mention and throwing this one away, but the fact is I didn't and I won't. I paid top whack for an RAC branded item. Had it been branded Nu-Tool, then is a different kettle of fish, it isn't and I would not have bought it.
I wonder if so many of the items would have sold had they worn the logo Nu-Tool?
The RAC is doing nothing about this and I will not lay down. Since making a call and placing postings on this forum, only once have I established the truth that because there are not enough enquiries, they may not produce updated maps for the unit, but they will for the cheaper RAC branded items. That is disgusting customer support. Made even worse by the fact that some users are RAC members and have been for many years.
I found this thread by 'googling' rac 220 satnav before buying it. Not 'Nu-tool satnav'. As a result of that, I look at it that others may do the same before making a branded RAC satnav purchase and that they will find out that it may be a wise move to do just as you have done rather than waste any money on an RAC branded item.
The more 'moans', the better, or do you disagree?
I still wait to see if our friend will pursue action against them, I have to say, it is something I am considering via Trading Standards against the RAC, certainly not against Nu Tool. No where in my RAC branded handbook does it say 'ring Nu Tool for help'.
I accept that in the handbook it clearly states on page 23 that the unit is made UNDER LICENCE from RAC Motoring Services by Road Com which is a trading name of Nu Tool. For me, the RAC cannot simply wash their hands of any involvement in this.
I hope this explains why I and others continue to 'moan'. I hope it makes the RAC administrators aware that they do have very annoyed customers on their hands and they need to do something rather than speak hot air and print nice words. Small claims action does not cost a lot. I have done it before and I am not scared of doing it again. I would rather they treat their customers correctly before such action is taken and not try to 'bat' the responsibility to someone else.
One final question, if this has nothing to do with the RAC, why is it posted on the RAC website under the RAC forum
    Enough said?
  • jerygrant's Avatar
may be we should all get too gether and bring a joint claim against the rac in the small claims court

I'm just waiting to see what 'gerry', 'Andrew' or the 'RAC Satnav team' come up with. If the silence continues, then I will take advice from sources and if that is positive I will do it myself, thank you for your offer.
The cost of civil action, re goods not fit for purpose, (if that is the most appropriate course of action), is far less than the price of a new unit. Had maps not been produced for the other 200 series units, then I would not mind, but to discriminate against those who bought other units is wrong.
I am at a loss why the RAC does not take control of this and their silence is disappointing.

    Trying for publicity

Well this thread has gone quiet! So I am trying a different line of attack/humiliation against the RAC and Nu Tool re their disgusting customer service by not providing updated maps for the 220. I am now going down the line of bringing this to the attention of the press. With luck, the bad press will do lots of harm to the reputation of the RAC and the suppliers. May I urge fellow owners who are now left with this out dated unit to do the same, what is it, strength in numbers? All it needs is a couple of articles published in the right place.

    German Maps

Hi all, is it possible to get a map of Dusseldorf and Duisburg downloaded to my RAC Sat Nav as i am going at the weekend?

Not driving though, just using it as a pedestrian.
  • binlid's Avatar
You can borrow my 220, though who knows where you will end up! Ask Nu Tool or the RAC, don't expect any action from them though!

We have always maintained that updates will be made available for ALL units. There really is no need for such anger, binlid. Have you ever actually called the helpline and spoken to me? I have always given honest and accurate information regarding updates and will continue to do so.

Updates are currently being quality tested for the RAC110, RAC210 and RAC220 and should be available from the helpline within the next 14 days as long as they pass the quality testing process.

Dear RAC sat nav team. Yes I have rung the RAC and I have rung the help line number. So have others according to the content of this thread. Please look at the previous posts! May I be specific here, try reading posts 254, 259 and 264 in this thread. I do wonder why there has been complete silence from the team! You are right with the word 'anger', I am fuming . Some people will lay back and give in, I will not. If you think the silent response from your team to the postings made on this thread over the past year costitutes good customer service, then we are on different planets. When I rung the team last year I was given the reply 'they will be available in the next couple of months', then on the next call a few months later it was, 'by the end of the year'. Read this thread and see I am not alone. How do you expect the buyers of these products to respond? Re your comments of 14 days after testing, I will say 'lets wait and see' I am not holding my breath, previous words by people I have spoken with have been a waste of time. Lets see if other owners of the RAC/Nu Tool sat nav units with out dated maps respond to your latest offering. Once again, would you like to buy a 220?

There has never been a complete silence from the team, only the most accurate information we could offer at any one point in time. I have never given false information, I have simply passed on to all forum users exactly what information was made available to me.

I assure you that the updates are being quality tested right now and I will personally ensure that one RAC220 update is kept to one side for you.

Let's see if a message is posted in the next couple of weeks saying 'updated maps now on sale for model 220 and..., price..., call...' Once that is posted, then I may believe it, especially as there has not been any 'take up' of my offer to sell my 220 to a member of the team! I refer to post number 264 where we were told that 2000 units were required and numbers were such that it was not viable but work was being done, I cannot see any further update since that which would give any users a 'light at the end of the tunnel'. I wonder how many members have given up and have actually bought satnav units from other manufacturers. One motoring journalist has advised me to do just that!

There is a sale on over Easter!

Hmm.... three weeks since my last posting and surprise surprise, no further information from the team. Well I have some news for all users of the RAC satnavs, a well known motorists car parts dealership has put an advert on tv saying they have up to 50% off sat navs over Easter. That could be a good deal as they will have up to date maps on them, (well more up to date than we have!)

I am not associated with that well know motorists store.

    Why are we still waiting

5 weeks ago i rang the RAC Customer (NO) Service team, they told me the maps for my 110 are being tested, "they will be ready in two weeks max". Please bare in mind that i have had the device since 2006 with no update available.
So when will they be ready?

    Guess what my job is??
over 5 weeks to test a tested software update, either the developers need sacked or the Testers do!

RAC or NUTOOOL please update us!!!!!

The updates can be ordered from the help line - 01302 720006
  • smudger's Avatar
£29.99, if they are the same price as the update for the 200 model.
I have been trying to save up to get it for my one, but every time I get it, another bill comes in:rolleyes:
    Cheers, Smudger.

Hmm, that is the word..... IF.
  • RAC_SATNAV_TEAM's Avatar
Exactly the same as the upgrades for the other units:

    £29.99 + P&P for UK/Ireland updates
    £49.99 + P&P for Western Europe updates

    Omg

:eek:I Rang up on Thursday brace yourself £33
Now i laughed so hard I hung up before they told me if they charged for postage!

You have got to be having a laugh you can almost buy a new SATNAV for that price these days.

Any one want to go halfers? :D
  • binlid's Avatar
Hmmm so that means they are charging £4 to post an sd card. Must be a special envelope and delivery service.
Oh guess I have forgot they may be adding the handling charge and the surcharge for using whatever method of payment you decide upon. It can't be £4 for a jiffy bag and postage, surely?
  • smudger's Avatar
Its the same with some of the P & P charges some folk put up on EBay? I think that size of Jiffy bag goes for around 60p at most Post offices, I use them a lot to post CDs.
    Cheers, Smudger.
  • testmanager's Avatar
    P&P

Yes if Smuger thinks £4 is acceptable P&P i think he works for the company don't you!
No one over charges on ebay anymore or the get neg feedback and no one would use them.
Shame we can't do the same here - unless we get in touch with BBCs watchdog?

Take my advise buy another, this one keeps letting me down any way - only got it for free speed camera updates, I didn't think i'd have to wait 3 years for new maps and then be charged 50% of the price of a new unit!
Mine going in the Bin along with RAC and NUTOOL's customer service!
  • binlid's Avatar
With E bay, if you are not happy with the postage, you can look for another supplier, or as you say, leave negative feedback. Sadly this cannot be done here. I wonder if the sd card is the same capacity as the old one, 256 and 512 cards are very hard to come by now, and I imagine if they could be found, they would cost pence rather than pounds. I do not want something for nothing, but I do wonder how these charges are justified considering the other products currently available. I note the 'Team' are once again rather quiet.
  • testmanager's Avatar
    card

Yes your right binlid the cards cost nothing, I bought a 2gb one for mine so I could play some MP3s on it, 2gb being the highest i could get the old 110 to go to.

Only two options as i see it, complain to some one like watchdog or pay the massive software cost, of you want to continue using your satnav from RAC ( which i now think stands for Rip off All Customers).

there are some not so legal options and off course buying a new make and model!

Keep posting the "team" might wake up
