Wrong and right

I was driving up the M5 on afternoon of Thursday 17 Sep and it was fairly busy. An 07 Ford Mondeo what else? was hogging lane 3 as pe usual. I did not run up to his bumper or flash my lights. I got into lane 2 a couple of times so he could see that there was miles of space for him to do so to let le through, but didn't budge.
When he finally did budge into lane 2 (all this at somewhere below-near the speed limit) the grey-haired "gentleman" stuck his two fingers in a manner you'd exepect from a hoodlum, even if he was dressed in a suit.
I mean, what is wrong with these people? I did not exactly ask him to move, did not push him, did not flash him, did not signal to him at all, and while he had all the space to move into lane 2 on a number of occasions, still refused to do so. So after all that, he still managed to behave like an imbecile.
How do you deal with these people, apart from ignoring them totaly?
Thanks for reading all this, but he really did annoy me.

    Idiot lane hogger

Next time flash (short and polite), if no response flash again. If still no response wait for a BMW to come up behind and let them through - they'll shift him/her! :D

Sabber, why not concentrate on driving your own vehicle? Your exception is in fact the correct thing to do, “ignore them totallyâ€.

The best thing to do is, Drive your own car to the 'Rules of the road' and don't get into any rage or arguments with other road users.

you should have smiled at him and given him the thumbs up! :p

Yea! that would be the best way to handle a situation like that. After all, by replying to his hand gesture you are only bringing yourself down to his level.;)

With all this road rage incidents we hear about on the roads today, its not safe to get involved!

To be totally, totally honest I would close up, wait, flash one, twice then undertake, probably leaning on the horn. Yes I know its totally poor and aggressive driving and I should know better but if its one thing that flips my switch is people who drive in a dither with no idea what they are doing or regard for other motorists.

On my journey from hell home , from Shropshire Sunday night, M6, M1, M25 the majority of queues were caused by people staying in L2 & L3 leaving massive 200m or more gaps and refusing to move over.

However, I think the correct procedure if the vehicle in front is doing the speed limit is stay behind as otherwise you would be speeding? Otherwise you would be undertaking which is also an offence which makes people who sit in L3 an absolute pain in the ***

I wonder if they could still call it Undertaking if you moved over the left lane, and stayed in it until you caught up with next queue stuck behind a Middle lane Hogger? Then join the queue of drivers who are doing the same thing!
Because that's exactly what I have doing for years;)

I appreciate all your replies. The guy was not constantly on the speed limit, and even if he was, he should pull into L2 and even L1 whenever possible, and in this case he had ample opportunity. As AdamB out it, there are a lot of people who hold up Lanes 2 & 3 causing all the tailbacks.
I have another post titled "Middle Laners" and I honestly think it is the single biggest cause of tailbacks on Motorways.
The only way around it is to allow undertaking. Remeber it is dangerous having to change three lanes to over take a tosser in Lane 2, so undertaking them is no more dangerous and would show them they're wrong.
I must admit, that slowley, I have noticed more and more drivers using Lane 1 more often, and better still, seeing some follow you into Lane 1 when you over take them and go into Lane 1, which must embarrass some.
